Me too, of course that would have made me very happy, but I do love the Tranny and now will have crash bars, so the bike is evolving.
Hi there,I have one of these trannys and I would be heart broken to have had this damage, although I am insured, your post has prompted me to buy crash bars only problem is no stock for six weeks, all the best with the rebuild, cheers Nev
Guys, Can't rate crash bars (or Engine Protection Bars...) highly enough. I've had the same set for nearly 10 years. They've cracked a few times, and I just weld them up. I dumped the TA last weekend (:eek1) on a pretty a gnarly, deeply rutted track. Dunno about speed, but was in 2nd or 3rd cog at the time. The bike slapped the ground pretty hard on the RHS. Damage? - scratched crash bar; & - put a scratch in the RHR fuel tank. That's it. They do make the bike wider (heavier), and a bit unsightly - but are worth every cent. Thanks for sharing your misfortune Pritchy. Sounds like it might save Nev & others the same fate. Cheers, Dan.
My mate dropped this off and our new place on the weekend as a house-warming pressy. Nice fire-bucket
G'day Guys, I've already posted this detail on havafati's "Has Honda got a new Africa Twin on the drawing board" thread, but thought this was pretty appropriate to post here as well. Basically: I called Honda MPE in Melbourne today, and spoke to lad called Jack. Now, he either genuinely knew nothing about a new Africa Twin, or ran the corporate line that they don't know about a new / developing bike. To this I mentioned there is a video on Youtube featuring an interview with Dave Hancock from Honda Europe covering off on many new or developing models, including the Africa Twin. Jack advised he knew nothing of the video. So, I sent them a link in my email to them . Further in my email, I asked what marketing research mechanisms they have in place to gauge interest. And also, will there be any field testing in Australia. Not likely they'll reply regarding field testing, but would be a consideration you would think... So, if you'd like to see a new Africa Twin in Australia - then send an Expression of Interest to this email address: customer.relations@honda.com.au Cheers, Dan. <!-- / message -->
Man, have you seen current honda models? What AT are you talking about??? In 5 years they will have three models: CB500, CB800 and CB1200 with three modifications: R (lots of plastic), F (no plastic) and X (straight seating position).
I do not trust honda. They will make "new AT" on 16" wheels, with 120mm suspension travels, and 260kg weight. If you need a cool bike, forget honda. Why not KTM990Adv? Or... DIY. This is mine:
yeah, I'm pretty interested in what they come up with as well. Maybe a reason to upgrade from the TA, though its still going just fine.
Hi fellow tranny owners,i have just purchased this bike 2001 personal import not going, motor turns over but that's as far as i know, any suggestions as to what to test or look for which may be applicable are most welcome, looking for plastics particularly side covers,or even damaged ones, mine have some of the lugs knocked off can weld others on,also anything you may want to sell/donate most apreciative, thanks nev
Which country did it come from? There are some differences! CDIs are the problem child with the 600, but once fixed and fitted correctly shouldn't cause any more concern. The reg/rec on such an old bike is also a must to check, so check the voltage from it. My dud one was putting out 18.4 volts and boiling batteries. The carbies and fuel lines will be your next place to check and then the air filter. How long since it has started? How is the counter sprocket shaft splines looking, can be a big problem on these if wrong sprockets are fitted or they come loose. The only plastics I see are usually from Europe on eBay, side covers are the most plentiful ones. Once going again they are a great reliable tractor. I have a near new Haynes service manual for sale if you want one.
Hi Cruz, looks like it was brought in to Qld on 2001,I did not purchase it from them so have no idea what country it came from, any ideas as to how I can find out,the PO couldn't get it started,so he says, havn't looked at anything yet,I have a few projects too look at first, but your ideas are most helpful, appreciate them, will let you know how I go,motor turns over and the PO says he had spark but we will see when I get to it,cheers Nev
Thanks for that info Cruz, bike was made in hondas Italy factory, conflicting numbers as to whether it is a 97 or 2001,there are four VIN numbers on the bike two @16 digit and two @17 digit, going to be fun at vicroads although it is reg in NSW, is the manual you have for sale 600 specific model or both models,600 and 650?how much and posted to 3810 please, cheers Nev
It is for the 600, 650 & Africa Twins, 87-07. Manual # 3919 Does yours have a rear drum or disc brake? $20 posted to you?
Hi all,I would like to swap my 2007 transalp XL650 V in great condition for an Africa Twin, around 1989 era in good cond, not looking for projects or something less than good but an honest well maintained unit, what have you got, would you like to update?,pm me here or phone 0466242645,cheers Nev ps I am in Vic but will travel for a good unit.
I'm confused, have you gt an 01 600 or 07 650 , or both? Imho the later 600's are a better bike than the 650 , and to be honest a good one is a close match for an africa twin. So if you have a late 600 , see if you can get it going, fit the front end off the 650 and sort the suspension etc etc before trying to get an AT. The africa twin ddn't have mc more power, the economy wasn't as good, and you still needed to fix the suspension. I'm basing this on having owned a couple of early 600's over 15 years, an rd04 africa twin, and having ridden a 95 600 as well as a few 650's -all ridden in real off road settings ( see the first few pages of this thread) Ps someone mentioned cdi ssues with the 600 , this only appled to the dual cdi's on the 87/88 models, it was pretty much solved in the early 90's. If you want to try a late model cdi we have a 95 model 600 in maffra ( about to head up to inaminka, but he'll be back in a few weeks)
