Some on-line researching based on what I am feeling, hearing and smelling points to one or more of these in this order:

    1) Throw-out bearing
    2) Clutch
    3) Flywheel

I have used Summers up here - no complaints. There is a Subi specialist on Riverside (Nice Car, Inc), but no experience with them.

Anyone have some first hand experience - good or bad and why?

I cannot recommend a shop since I live down south but they are easy cars go work on. Replace the clutch, bearing and have the flywheel turned at the same time. Get estimates ahead of time and also ask them how long it will take so that you can hold them to it. Verbal contracts are binding ;)

I just put an automatic transmission in my mother in laws 98 legacy wagon. My buddy and I pulled one from a car at u pull and pay and then installed it in hers. It took us a day to locate the same Trans and remove it and then another day to get the old one out of my car and put the replacement in.

Thanks for that, but time and skill is not on my side for this. I need to pass this one over to a professional :lol3

My wife's Grandpa used to own the Subi dealer in FTC. When he sold, several of his mechanics went to Houskas. Its been awhile since I last used them, but they always seemed solid and reputable..

Not Subi specific, but I like to stick with smaller independent shops. First choice: Gilsdorf. 2nd Choice: Ft. Collins muffler & automotive.

Next door neighbor's son in law is a Subi mechanic in FtC. I'll get you some information, then you can ask if anyone's heard of him. Sending text to neighbor now.

FWIW, Nice Car is a good shop. Friendly and quite good at knowing Subis. I've had a number of good interactions with them.
