I am headed out early next week with the goal of making it to San Diego to see my cousin. Route and time are flexible. Anybody recommend good places to ride, camp, eat along the way? Anybody want to burn some miles? I will be on a Dr650 wanting to ride some bumpy roads.

I can just offer up some local rides when you get to SD and a fairly well stocked garage with some decent DR knowledge if needed.

    Safe travels and have fun!!

Trophyhunter, that would be awesome! Hopefully I won't need a garage, but definitely good to know. I should be there towards the end of next week. Do you know of anywhere to rent a dual sport around San Diego??

Assuming that you will be on Highway 101 as you head south:

-Take the Lost Coast hiway: at Fortuna, CA, head towards Ferndale, then Petrolia and continue to Weott. This section is all paved (I believe there is unpaved section that you can take to get back to Highway 1, but I'm not familiar with that -- others here may be familiar with it).

-Hiway 1 section from Leggett to Fort Bragg: Wonderful road with sharp curves.

-As you get into the Los Angeles area: Los Angeles Crest, Highway 2. From here, take 138 to 18, to 38 (Big Bear Lake), then make your way back to I-10. You could go from there to Highway 74, then 371, then 79 to 78, then back to I-15. Yes, it's the long way to San Diego, but you said your time was flexible! :D

All paved, except for that one section of the Lost Coast Hiway. I don't know the condition of the unpaved section.
