Been doing some farkling. Quick bit of history. I had a 2009 that was pretty well kitted, including heavier springs and oil in the front end. Was happy with it, but it did let me down in the rough stuff. Bought a 2013, and shifted most of my farkles over. For the front end, I got some advice...and some parts from Lukas. It now looks like this: Parts/Mods so far as follows: Custom 48mm WP forks, fully adjustable....PLUSH AS! (Lukas) Modified KTM triples (Lukas) Single MotoMaster 320mm Disk and 4 pot calipre on the front (adaptoer from Lukas) 19 and 21" front wheels, billet hubs (orange for road in a nod to ktm front end, black for offroad), excel rims HDB risers, clamps, hand guards, mirrors, and under bar mount for Scotts Damper Carmichael bend Protaper Bars Brittania Composites Mirage fairing HID head lights Zumo 350 GPS in Touratach lockable mount Fuzeblock to manage the accessories Power Commander V and auto tune Remus hexacone and catless headers BDCW bashplate Jesse Panniers 17" rear billet hub in orange with cush drive (RAD Mfg) Pivot Pegz Mk3 Touratech foldable gear and break levers Mud sling SW-Motech power ring and tank bag Running Pirelli Scorpions on road at the moment, but will change to Road Attack 2s when they wear out....and TKC 80 front Heidenau K60 rear off road. I think I am done....actually, not quite. Need to find a way to make my Adv Spec crashbars fit with the remus headers. BIG THANKS TO LUKAS!
..........................................Wow Is it any sacrifice losing the other brake rotor? I love the black forks. How much did all that cost for the forks and triple?
.... .......gee...if I did that, imagine how many BMW parts I would need to purchase to make this bike I love my BMW...I love the people I ride with in local bmw clubs....whilst I accept this is a little more work and a little more expense than changing the cartridge inserts....it isn't that much...and the difference in performance is profound! It is all reversible with about half a days work.
that's the spirit. Always these KTM or KLR guys -- why are they on our threads and try to "reason" with us ... Very nice work. I still need to get the suspension setup done. Now if I only can convince this guy in Germany to sell me parts .... petzi-baer
The triples actually hit on the headset (near the ignition) at about the same position as the stops would have. You can see in the second picture where the top clamps are. They hit on the head set just near where the "5pt" Torx security bolt is. Having said that, Lukas apparently has a cunning plan which he hasnt filled me in on yet.
Wow amazing looking bike. I'm not a big fan of the new design (I keep telling myself that to keep my bike ) but yours look amazing. Very good work mate! You get my thumbs up! <label for="rb_iconid_24"></label> Oh btw could you link me where you got your front brake rotor? I really dig the design )
Up until I hit a deer with my R1150r a year and a half ago I was a BMW guy. I had the R and and a 1978 R100/7. My question was a real question and Hamish gave me a real answer. I'm currently riding a KTM 950 and really enjoy the suspension on the 950, which is what you now have on your GS800. I think your answer about riding with other BMW riders is a real and correct answer to why we make the choice which bike to buy. Now what is the list of parts I need to convert my 950 to a GS800 Best Regards Blackalac
When I bought my F800GS last year I compared it with the ADV (A great bike btw), but someone I thought the KTM is about $2000-3000 more expensive than the F800GS. Which - I reasoned - I could use to get the suspension setup of the F800 right. And still have a better gas mileage and more dealers to choose from. petzi-baer
I purchased a 2004 KTM 950 with 1750 miles on it for $6,500.00 in October of 2011 it now has 14,000 miles on which included a period of 3 months after my crash during which I was not allowed to ride. The deal I made with my wife after the crash was that I could buy the bike but not ride it until after my daughters wedding 3 months later. If I was buying new, your logic would have worked for me. Never the less the WP forks are great and I also got the WP shock along with the deal
True, but I have abs, traction control, and electric dampening control of the rear shock :) Its horses for courses... If I owned a 950/990, Im sure I would be beating that drum. My dirt bike is a 300exc...before that I owned 2 450 excs. I love my ktm....I love my bmw.... When I chose the F800 over the 990, it came down to the fact that even though I get away off road every month, I commute every day. Even then, it was a close run thing. Here in Australia, BMW run an annual 5 day rally. A couple of my mates go on it every year. It was 2 months befre that rally that I bought a bike. Going on that rally with my mates definitely affected the decision.... and I must like it cause I traded my 09 for 13.
Not re-start a Holy War that I missed, but I don't think KTM makes an equivalent bike. The 9x0 Adventure is a much bigger machine. The 690 is a much smaller machine. Same for the 640. The only bike that comes close to the F800GS is the Triumph 800XC. If you think this GS is indulgent, you should see mootsuno's F650 Dakar. He's invested in a zillion mods to basically turn a BMW 650 into a KTM 690. The F800GS doesn't really have a comparable bike in the KTM line, and I don't see KTM making a smaller twin cylinder adventure bike (or even an A model of the 690) any time soon.
