Living like chickens, Padre e Hijo do it again

Living like chickens as in getting up and calling it a day as the sun rises and falls. Eating and drinking when the urge arrives, not worrying about much (well, until we should be), you know.....just living like chickens down in Baja. Jerry is turning 70 and we are packing up and excited to be celebrating together on the trail. Old enough to know better and young enough to do it again.
Over the next two days we will be checking our bikes, reviewing spares, gear, and maps. On Tuesday morning we start the trip from Sedona south and west, crossing at Algadones, lunch at San Filepe, and cold ones at Alfonsinas in the Bay of Gonzega. After that the trip really starts, time slows, and the life of chickens starts.

Anyway, lots of ideas for routes, side trips fishing, whale tours, cave paintings, mission trips, fish tacos, pig roasts, and cold Pacifico's ahead. We hope to update as we are able.

Good to get this out of the way now. BMW= bike more work?

Well after some tire changing practice in the garage in Sedona we decided to go for breakfast with mom, visit, fill gas, run around a bit and then it was time for lunch. Ok. Lunch with mom then on the road, after that morning we only made a bit past Yuma and stayed at the casino just north of Algadones. Up early this morning, coffe and bananas, crossing the border at 6:45 no stop necessary. We found our way threw Algodones and south on 2, then 3, then 4 until we hit 5. In San Felipe now for lunch in the malacon. Fish and shrimp tacos & cokes. It's warm and sunny, a very nice thing after the -15F crap back home in WI.

Things are going well and we are on track for beers at Alfonsinas tonight.

We were up early at the casino, ( jerry reports winning $4.50) even with horrible odds (I figure gambling is a tax for those who failed math) but anyway it was an early night and an early morning, the roosters had not started crowing when we got up. Had coffee and got rolling in the dark, the border doesn't open until 6:00 am, we crossed shortly after, still in the dark. No stop required going south, found our way in Algodones and keep rolling past the fields and small towns, the smell of burning brush and plastic, it was a bit cold at 50F. A stop or two along the way for petro and a taco stand, all is good. San Felipe was still waking up when we arrived, made our usual way to the Malacon and found a place eager to seat us. Tacos camarones and cokes followed by ice cream cones. Mmmmm,.........

Back on the road south to Puertecitos, the Pmex was open and had gas, that's nice. After that things have changed since our last trip........the blacktop just keeps going, and going, and going. We finally hit the old rock washboard about 3 mi north of the checkpoint. The Pmex at Gonzega also had gas along with about anything else you would want. Change is constant I guess. Well the nice side is we arrived at Alfonsinas way early, no other guests so we got our usual favorite room and a couple cold Pacifico's to enjoy beach side. Rooms have been "modernized" and are now $70. The place has been painted and is looking good, about 255mi today.

After changing it was time to air down the tires and have another cold one. Nice. It's pretty quiet around here yet and we both like it as is.

Since it was early, a walk on the beach was a nice opportunity and it was a very low tide, we came back with hands full of clams and delivered them to the kitchen. 15 min later we got a tray of steamed mussels delivered to our room. Delicious!

Tomorrow we plan on stoping at Coco's place on our way to San Ignacio, another pretty long day but we are planning to meet friends at the yurts for a few days.

Up early agin, like roosters I guess. Coffee and conversation with a few others on the patio of Alfonsinias, off to visit Coco. Nothing new, coco is well and has a few new cats. We hit MX1 and twisted them up to make San Ignacio for cold ones. In early enough for a trip up the river to the springs, nice trip.
Time for dinner and more news later. Tomorrow is a trip to the whales.

No troubles in chicken paradise. Lets ride amigos!

During morning coffee and stories at Alfonsinas we discovered one of the fellows was an original racer in the 1000 in 1967, better yet he was a class winner and 3rd overall! Chuck raced a 2wd jeep in 67, after 30 hrs he and partner finished 3rd overall behind one buggy and one bike. What a wealth of Baja knowledge, Chuck talked like he knew every rock in Baja. He and his group were making a reuse resurrection of old trail from Gonzega to bay of LA.

Anyhow, we were off for Coco interactions. After $2.00 cokes and stories we continued onto MX1. Air up the tires again and point Em south. A stop for lunch and a stop for fuel put us into San Ignacio pretty early, returning to the Yurts was something to look forward to. It's warm and sunny so a kayak trip up stream to the "hot springs", they are not hot but worth a exploration trip.

Back to the yurt for a hot tub and cold Pacifico! Terri is not doing dinners on Thurs nights but their daughter has started a restaurant just off the squar, Tootsies. It's great.

The roosters are crowing and I'm sitting by the remains of last nights campfire with coffee and iPad. Others are starting to appear and breakfast smells awesome.

Mom and other friends from Sedona have driven the car down to join us so today we are all going out to the lagoon to pet the whales. Dad and I will be riding our bikes out, on watch for idiots on the wrong side of the road.

Tonight is dinner at the yurts and tomorrow dad and I point em south again.

Another great day ahead.

After a super breakfast we headed out to the lagoon, things have again changed, progress in Baja. Another 15k has been paved, I think I mentioned that the road south of SF has also had a lot of pavement added, nearly all the way to Gonzega Bay. Anyhow, what a surprise today. We returned to see our friends at Antonio's, Baja Adventures and Dannelia took us out to see the whales, several hundred of them. They serve a super lunch of fish, scallops, beans & rice....
The weather was sunny, warm, light sea breeze, I left my hat off too long and got plenty of sun. Oh boy. Solar powered Nels?

Back at the yurts, change of clothes, Pacifico, lounger for a bit. Several of the others headed back into the plaza for a town stroll before happy hour. It's very nice in San Ignacio, a great place to relax, rest, loose track.

Tomorrow morning the 5 will be headed north back to Sedona in the Chevy, dad and I get to take it easy as chickens do, we are headed south. Pig roast in Muluge is calling.

Mileage log is at just over 600mi now, still many days of riding in these chickens.

Roosters definitely don't get up early. To do that, they'd have to sleep through the night, and wouldn't be able to keep you up with their calls all night...

That is true, roosters do in fact crow all night. Not just at sun rise. Part of the fun of traveling in the countries with chickens in the streets.
One challenge of getting up early is finding coffee.

After a quick post to agree with the comment about roosters crowing all night and that I am actually fond of that sound (well not always, like when I am trying to sleep) but mostly I am fond of chickens in the streets and roosters crowing when ever they please. Well after all that, we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast and wished the others a safe trip north. Dad and I got organized, packed the bikes and headed out for Muluge. We made a side trip out to the point near Palo Verde, it's about 15 mi of typical Baja rocky, sandy, washboard, rutted road. Totally worth exploring. Near the end we found a small place to get tacos pescado, cervesa's, and took them to the beach for ashore lunch, after spent some time beach combing.

Thinks were going so well and we were way ahead of schedule, rather than stop in Muluge we kept on for Loreto. What a nice city Loreto is. We kept getting the same recommendation for a dinner spot, Mita Gourmet. After a grande Pacifico at the garden table we made our way to Mita for dinner. I asked for what they were most proud of, especial de la casa la dia. Dad had chicken fajata's, both were the best food either of us has had in the last week, or longer. It was good. We chased it with ice cream comes from the shop around the corner.

We are hoping to go fishing in the morning but its been windy so that's not promising, a trip to the mission is the alternative, also the weekly farmers market is in town from 7-9 so that could be interesting too.
