Don't show me pics like this! I'd love to have that bike! Would make a perfect companion for the hack.
Naked is good, just don't be too quick to get rid of the wide handlebars from the RT. Leverage is a good thing, DAMHIKIJK!
That Lowell Neff subframe is a real find. Where did you pick that up? I understand he passed away a year ago or so, but even before then was hard to get ahold of for the final few years.
No I plan on keeping the stock bars just because of the sidecar. BTW What does DAMNHIKIJK mean... As for the Neff Subframe, I found it on IBMWR.org Market Place. I was checking almost every day multiple times a day.
I got an extra N in there, sorry....... Don't Ask Me How I Know I Just Know BTW that's gonna be a nice rig, looking forward to the build.
Great project. I love the old Sputniks! ...the sub frame you acquired looks to be a great set up. Keep the photos coming as she comes together. I've been keeping on the lookout for a reasonably priced Sputnik hack in my travels but to no avail so far. I really like the Sputnik's configuration with the hinged hoods, etc. Our old Jupiter hack is holding up well but I'd like to set up a 2nd. Sputnik rig using my old naked GL Goldwing. I think the GL would be a great tug.
Hey thanks! I'm super excited about it. I just need to take my time and budget myself monthly so I don't go broke building the hack. lol. I just need to tune up the bike really and throw on the subframe. I'd love to get it mounted and aligned before December so I can take my wife down to Long Beach for the International Motorcycle Show. That would be awesome!
My budget built tug took a couple years and a lot of scrounging but it was done cheap. I've been riding for well over 40 years and have never had so much fun as we do with the hack. I got all my "speed" fixes on two wheels done at an earlier age. Of course a guy has to keep a couple two-wheelers around just in case. We attend all the So. Cal. Airhead events we can during the Winter months. Agua Caliente at Anza Borrego for New Years Eve is a gas!.......... We're usually the only hackers there.
Lowell is still alive and slowly building sidecars. I just spoke to a mutual friend of ours on the phone today that is going to go out to the desert and visit him this weekend. Lowell has always built the nicest and strongest sidecar components in the US. Finding a used Lowell Neff subframe was a huge score. I just did a frame repair on a BMW that had 100k miles on it that had a Neff leading link and subframe. That in itself is a good testament to the build quality.
Lowell normally provided a lug that you would weld to the frame for the upper mount which we recently learned was good for 100k miles. When using his subframe I have always drilled a hole in the frame in welded a round lug in for the upper mount. Here is a picture of the lug. here are some interesting pictures that should not be a concern for your subframe. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.428873953825099.94009.237920049587158&type=3
That's good to hear! He still has a website up, but he never responded to any inquiries I made about subframes and LLs awhile ago. Our friend Tom told me he had passed. Tom owns a Neff /5 rig that has over 100K miles on it, I'm sure.
