I was just curious, those who have done the NWT/Alaska to Ushuaia, or similar rides, did you find you planned enough, too much, or not enough?

At first I was planning to plan the crap outa the trip, but, many years ago, when I first went to Thailand, I just showed up on a plane at 1am. My buddy says;"So, where we staying tonight? I replied;" Dunno, havent looked that far ahead yet, lets toot around a bit and find something!"
That to me was a ton of fun and after he got over it, was for him too.
I debated if that same laise faire attitude would work in CA/SA? Sorta just follow the road south, and see what it brings. Grab maps of course, but shift on the fly, adjust as things come.

    Any input on this?
    Thanks!
