Day 2: 2/18/13 Gonzaga Bay to San Francisquito, continued
191 miles






Everyone was feeling hopeful.
We’re almost there!
That’s just a little sand. We’re good.







And then we saw this.






Crap.
I got off to go scout.
Looking back at Goggles and BigWan.






Rocky.






Very rocky.






Big ol’ chunks.






Sigh.






The boys dug deep and then went for it...

I’m pretty sure this is what mrdozer called the “What the f*** were we thinking” trail...






But, I still kinda like “Wan Way.”







OK, NOW can we celebrate? We did it! Congratulations, everybody!

We were feeling hopeful as we started to descend...






So far, so good...






There was a wash at the bottom (of course) and it was full of deep sand.
Matt and I were so tired, we had a get off right here.






We didn’t really see a trail here, just trying to make our way towards the road.






Somewhere around here, we hit some deep, soft stuff and I got flung into a sage brush.
I smelled like sage for a while, but at least it wasn’t a cactus!






Still looking for the road...






Found it!






Then lost it.






Connecting the dots, remember?






Here we go!
We popped out on the main road right here,
next to one of Coco’s warning signs.






Now we were on the way to Coco’s corner.






There it is!





Three hours to go from Punta Final to Coco’s Corner.
Is that a record or something?




Only 173 more miles to go!!

LW, this was definitely the trail we took, or as I called it "the what the f@#k were we thinking trail" but I think the official name is the 8 mile trail. I ride rocks all the time at home for fun, crazy I know!! and this trail was all we wanted going down hill on small bike! great job riding up hill on big pigs! great pictures of the trail too! I only got two since I was busy hanging on for dear life!!

Yah, that's the trail, mine road or miners road I seem to recall Bill Nichols call it. It looks worse now than it did the last time up a couple years ago.

Serious kudos to you guys for riding up on those big beasts.

I'll be going up it in a month from...hmm...yesterday! I'll be starting early in the AM before the heat becomes a factor.

BTW, "YOINKING" is one of my favorite passtimes

P.S. I see Dozer posted while I was typing so I guess the name of the trail is the "8 mile mine rd from hell, what the fuck were we thinking!"

That was an incredible bit of riding guys, i could not imaging trying or wanting to ride that on a big bike.

And, no, i don't want the tracks for this route!

Back when we were dating, I gave Matt a pink toed tarantula.
(don't bother looking that up in the urban dictionary, it's an actual spider )





Coco wasn't there, but the ladies behind the desk had cold beer.
Ahhh. That's the stuff.






What we really needed was water.
All they had left were a few of these stupid mini bottles ("chicos".
We'll take 'em!






I was looking everywhere for NSFW's "PYYPP" sticker,
but I never found the one at Coco's.






Even looked in the ladies outhouse (though I'm sure Joel is too much of a gentleman to put one in there)

And then it was off to the Calamuje Wash.

Everyone was happy to be ticking off some miles after this morning's slow work.

It was a nice change after all those rocks.











I wasn't looking forward to the next part (deep sand),
but it wasn't that bad.






We sent Goggles and Bartek ahead...






And made sand our favorite.
I had to ask Matt to stop for this photo.
It was too hard to ride and snap in this stuff...






I had expected worse so I was pleasantly surprised.






We still had a couple "oh shit" moments.

But, overall we were pleased.

We needed to feed the Bartek (and soon!)

I salute you guys. I have down single track and have done considerable rides
on washed out trails l between Mike's Sky ranch and rancho El Coyote big and intermediate singles (n xr600, wr400 ,ktm 525)
But never, ever, nope , nein, niet ever attempt such washed out trails on a big and heavy beast.
You guys have big huevos rancheros.
I salute you and please keep posting....it gives me hope to try something before i die :)

You guys are so awesome, your rides never cease to amaze me. That one vid of Big Wan coming up that rock wash I think his tires were in the air more than they touched the rocks. To tackle the this stuff while laughing and smiling is insane and in the middle of nowhere....2up:eek1
