:: Vietnam by Motorcycle - or by the Bikers

Ok guys, it came to me from suggestion of a forum inmate that I should make this thread to collect all the information about Vietnam, a small Country where not many of you have visited.
Not too much ambitious for the purposes of this thread, just to make ease for you guys who may like to read about Vietnam, may like to travel to Vietnam, or even plan a serious ride in Vietnam.

Be noted that I am not a tourist Rep or something like that. I am purely a technical guy and love Motorcycle and traveling by Motorcycle.

There are also some promising reports of being able to temporarily import >175cc bikes at the Cha Lo - Nam Pao border crossing from Laos.

I will probably never be able to afford the trip but I am interested in that area of Asia,so I will be reading these threads.Thanks to your sig link.

i myself just spent a the month of July 2012 in Saigon holed up in a small clean/cool hotel room,,,took a 4 day trip to Vung Tau spending almost all my time in the water and beating off hawkers from morning til night

A couple of thing would help Vietnam.
1: they recognized international drivers licence.
2: it was easier to take a bike into Vietnam.
These could only benefit tourism and the countries economy.

Firstly I think this is a great thread. Very helpful and thank you to all who contribute. I am new to the whole motorbiking adventure forums, but I was wondering could anyone provide information on buying bikes in HCMC, particularly 125 Minsks and Honda Win 110.

1) What to look out for when buying the bike
2) What to get changed/replaced before starting your journey
3) Mechanics to go too for this
4) What spares to bring on the journey with you (e.g HCMC to Hanoi)
5) Any links to a place to buy paperback maps (I know of the garmin link)
6) Does anyone have experience of just using google maps on their smart phone for navigation?
7)any other advice.

I know some of these are very basic questions, but I am only learning and appreciate any info you can provide. Thank you :)

Thanks for the useful links, am hoping to do a Ho Chi Minh Trail ride in 2014, 10 years after my last very enjoyable tour of northern Viet Nam on a Minsk. I will be in touch if my trip goes ahead.

I intend to do some riding in Vietnam next March 2014. My plan is to rent a bike in Hanoi and goes north. Any itinerary recommended?
