Oh no! You do not deserve this kind of misfortune.
The stars are out of alignment.
The bike deserves to be in a museum by now.

Thanks for the hints, Thomas and Andrea.

We're working on the problems and expect to work the things out in some time. Good news is that the subframe is on the way to Africa as we speak :thumb

As for the suspension, we already got it repaired - thanks to Hyperpro for professional and fast assistance!!! :clap

I am sure I speak for others here as well when I say I am impressed with the way you approach these major problems you encounter on your travels. Not sure I'd remain quite so calm.

Sending some more money to keep this thread, the best ride report ever on advrider, going.

Good luck with the repairs. Looking forward to more tales of African Adventures :-)

Nice ride report, I just managed to catch up.

I have a quick question for you - do you two have some kind of communications gear so that you can talk to each other while on the bike? Some kind of radio or intercom setup?

    Enjoy Africa!

Absolutely great thread and journey. Sorry for the mechanical challenges you have in Africa, but I guess that is all part of the adventure. Sent a few dollars to help the cause. Best wishes to you both!

    Cheers guys!

We used to have one before, but not on this trip. We just did not find it to be very useful - we can always chat when we stop, or if there is something that needs to be said at that precise moment, we just open our visors and yell. Sounds hilarious, but it works. The kit we had back then was with cables that were pretty annoying to manage as well and I had to repair and solder the wires too often.

Bluetooth sounds like a solution, but it's too much $$$ and as said, we didn't find the intercom particulary practical in our case.

Hard to say right now, but we definitely are moving in that direction (unless we are stuck with our shocks and frames, that is), and will have to make the decision of either continuing down south or turning around and going north instead quite soon. Will see how much the repairs will cost us, and how much more time they will take, and then decide how to go on.

Will keep you updated on how it goes.

I heard you found a friend of mine also riding a 1100GS in Africa, and also with a broken subframe. His name is Gonçalo. Thank you for helping him. I am trying to get some parts to build a 21" "plug and play" front wheel for his GS.

Did you reinforce the new subframe? With just a few changes it can be much stronger.

    Keep going!!!! :clap

Yes, we sent Gonçalo on the road just a few days ago. His frame was broken from the known weak spot on R1100/1150 models - we had this part reinforced before we left home. The next spot that may break is in the rear which we also had reinforced on the road. And when all those are reinforced like in our case the next spot is the shock mount that breaks like we found out and never heard anybody else had it fail! :D

The new subframe is still on its way and hoping to receive it in the end of next week and yes, we have to reinforce the new one again. :doh

I have mine reinforced above the footpegs and bellow the pillion seat, but I also never heard about them breaking in the shock... I have to take care of that in a near future.

Please keep posting and have a nice journey.
