Help with advice please! I'm touring on a 2013 R1200GS built to US specs and delivered in Germany. I'm in Sandnes, Norway and somehow I've lost my key and don't have a spare. :eek1 Very special - as in really, really feeling stupid and airheaded. Either I spectacularly left the key in the bike and someone took it, or I've managed to truly "lose it"... and have torn the hotel room and my kit apart numerous times. Retraced all steps ala "Hangover" and no joy as well. Of course I'd just whip out my spare if I'd been wise enough to get that sorted beforehand, but no, I honestly didn't bring them... And, because it's Sunday nothing is open and roadside assistance numbers in U.S. and Norway don't have people "in the know". They are contractors working to get me off the road should that be needed. Nope, bike's securely parked in the hotel parking with a fat chain on it. Luckily, I'm within 30 minutes of a local BMW dealer, who opens at 9am Monday. I've called their number and e-mailed without success, but that's expected. My question for those who've experienced or know: Can the dealer cut a key with the VIN only, accompanied by my registration and ID? Or, will they be required to haul the bike into the shop to get it onto a computer to program the ECU and immobilizer to the new key? Any and all advice in advance appreciated. Thanks, Stranded in Sandnes...
In the U.S., I had an extra key made as a backup. The dealership couldn't do it, instead having to order it cut from BMW. Good luck.
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=836736 52. I LOST THE KEY(S) TO MY BIKE. WHAT DO I DO NOW? http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=396942 http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=791283 You've joined a small but non-exclusive club. And, of course, check the SEAT lock. Ooops?
The local dealer can hopefully get you a new key pretty fast. If I remember correctly from when I needed one I orderd it like tuesday morning and had it at the dealer on thursday of same week. Tell them you're in a hurry when you get hold of them
Thanks all. Seat lock, dirty socks, panniers (separately keyed), gadget bag, inside helmet liner, etc. hotel room ransacked, 100m perimeter around bike searched, storm drains, you name it! Finally just sat down to a $13 Norwegian beer! At least the riding here is glorious!!
At a push I'll bet you could trace the wires from the switch to a connector and do some connecting. Unless of course you locked the steering, something I never do. I did this on my 1150. Of course it had no alarm. Put a sign on the bike. $200 cash reward for lost key no questions asked. Here's a strange tip one of my sons in law told me: Turn out the lights and search the room with a flashlight, you don't miss anything that way. I wish you all the best of good fortune. Please find your key
If all else fails, can you remove the top fork bridge? Take it to a local lock smith, see if he might make a key.
BMW has to send you a vin specific key with the correct response to the computer when you turn the ign lock. The dealer should be able to call BMW and get the key overnight FedEx or whatever carrier you have there. And you can relax for a day or two and enjoy the local beer. It's only money.
Answer is yes. Local BMW dealers should be able to "order" new keys for you with VIN number along with a valid registration and an ID. I guess you can ask for an "urgent" service and get your keys in couple of days, but it will cost you little bit more than regular service. While waiting for your keys, you may enjoy a nice hike to Preikestolen Have a nice and safe trip!
Great tips! I will order a key tomorrow and will pick up the bike Saturday to ride home. Meanwhile I will be back to work for a few days. Time is unfortunately the commodity in short supply ;-(. Did the Pulpit Rock walk yesterday. Spectacular scenery on the trail, and then there was the view !!
I hit 3 European dealers to attempt to get keys in less than 5 working days and all of them failed. I give props to Jone Larsen @ Bikerstreet Motors in Stavanger, Norway for going the extra mile and elevating up to the Nordic district in Stockholm, but they ultimately turned him down. So, bike is parked up and I am heading home for work. May not be able to get back for a month ;-(, but if I can locate the AWOL spares at home I will be back Friday night. Wish me luck! Anyway, thanks all for all the tips and tricks.
Sorry to hear your trip ending early. If it was me, I'd probably find the key in. A pair of pants i wore when I got home It took a month from me to get a spare key for my bike from the dealer. They had to have it shipped from Germany. I now have my spare key duct taped under a side panel that only I know about.
Nothing to offer here but moral support, Norway is BEAUTIFUL this time of year. The wife and I were there last fall and it was a trip that we will never forget. I wish that I had more for you but good luck.
I have a spare key hidden on the bike in a very difficult to reach location. When I go on multi-day trips, I also pack an additional spare and keep it in my riding pants pocket. Reading your story is a good reminder of why I've done this. Best of luck and please let us all know how things turn out.
