Opinions on mounting my radar detector in my tank bag?

I've always mounted my radar detector on the handlebars in the past, however, I'd like to try putting it in the tank bag so I don't have to worry about weather at all. Any opinions on this? Will the abilities of the detector be effected by being inside a textile bag? Powering it won't be a problem, but I'm just curious about the funtions/abilities of it.

I did a search on here and didn't find anything, but I did (google) find an article of someone doing this before. However, nothing was mentioned as to how it effected the strength of the detector if it did at all.

    Thanks

If I recall, I don't think it had a significant impact on radar, but you lose laser alerts.

Sounds like you are right. I just got smart and talked with someone at Escort. He said that radar will be uneffected, laser will be lost , and if there is metal in the tankbag that the GPS receiver in my 9500ix will be effected.

Sounds no bueno...I guess it'll go back on the handlebars.

I have a battery powered Escort Solo2 that I run out of the top pocket of my tank bag. Not scientific testing, but I think the radar detection was impared when I kept it zipped inside. I would get a warning, but usually too late to do anything about it. I now keep the front of the pocket open, exposing the front to line of sight and I think I get earlier warning.

Not that happy with the Solo.. I have an older 8500 and it always gives me fair warning.

I used to run my V1 from the top of the map pocket in my BigMac tankbag. The map pocket opened to the front, so it was easy to run the wire out the front. I lost lazer, but otherwise is worked fine.

My new bike has the BMW bag, and the map pocket opens to the rear, no good for running the wire, and I wasn't happy with making a hole for it.

I now run the V1 on an accessory shelf, up where I can see it better, also the lazer protection is back.

The tank bag mounting was handy, and I miss it.

:nod , but if you get lasered, you're likely hosed anyway......

Ran with one in the bag for quite a while, seemed fine (I made an inverted "U" shaped platform for it out of cardboard to rest on. Some I've seen have used a cut out plastic container...)

Here is mine inside my GS tank bag. I made a box that it sits on top of to position it high. I use the H.A.R.D. wireless unit with remote led light inside my helmet. I don't notice any difference inside tank bag. As others have noted, the laser is reduced greatly, but I've heard that most detectors don't save your ass in laser mode in most situations. I do like having it out of sight cause LEO's don't like to see these things!

    What about behind a fairing?
On my trophy, I have what's essentially a "shelf" under the headlight.
It would make a fine hideaway for my Bel, but I can't find a definitive answer if the bodywork seriously degrades the radars sensitivity. (Not too concerned about laser).

I'm no expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I can't imagine it would have much of an effect. RADAR uses radio waves. I don't think a little plastic body work would have much of an effect on radio waves.

Have had my 8500 tucked away inside the map pocket of the tank bag since I got it, works great there. It is covered by a map (duh, its a map pocket) with wires running through a hole into the bag where the connections are.

I expected the laser to be useless since it is 99% covered, although there is a small slit at the front still open to the sensor. However, in a specific area near the MSO Airport it usually alerts me to a laser. Cannot figure out how or why.

Except that it seems like half the time I get an alert I'm under decent acceleration. At least the laser alert should keep the cost of the ticket down.:lol3

Never thought about your idea but do you have a remote warning gadget so you can still see or hear the warnings?
