I came out of work to ride my bike to lunch, and noticed that the chunky block antenna on my Garmin V was broken off for me.

Can I get this fixed or replaced inexpensively?

Remove Garmin V. Replace with a newer unit.

Really, I have no idea. I know that seven or eight years ago, the V was most full-featured GPS available.

It might be time for an upgrade. A used or refurbished 2610, 2720, or 2820 can be had for a couple hundred dollars and the features compared to the V will blow you away.

Or you can probably find a replacement V on eBay for $100 or less.

I knew someone would say "get a new one". :lol3

The thing is, I haven't made the decision to want/need/get a new one- and if I do, I'd like to give this one to my kid to play with.

Is the mount for the antenna on the back of the GPS undamaged?

You can buy a replacement antenna unfortunately more $$ than you might want to spend ($30 some years back). Other wise probably be looking for a dead unit for parts. I think the III, III+, V, 176, 276, 378 etc all use the same piece.

Broken off? or just missing in action? They do fall off.

If it is broken, and the unit is undamaged, you can install one of the auxiliary antennas that are sold.

If the unit is damaged, I doubt Garmin provides repair services any more. Even if they did, it would cost more to repair than its worth.

Yes, you can buy a replacement antenna. I like getting stuff from www.GPScity.com

If all else fails, it looks like the GPS V can be found on eBay for less than $50. Whether you keep or replace your V, I still recommend checking out newer units. You'll be shocked.

I have a dead one you can have for the postage. The unit appears complete but it would't locate satilites and was replaced with a Zumo.

    I' m in Mid-Mi.

I might take you up on the offer.

I'll take a pic of what's "left" and post it today.

I have a V among others, and I will check, but I'm pretty sure that the antenna is easily replaceable.

Yup, just checked and it pops right off (once you've aligned the 'tit with the slit,' so to speak :D). Unless you can see a metal "male" bayonet connection where the antenna used to be, then it is broken off, and the remains will need to be removed.

If you need a replacement, I'd be happy to send one. I always use a radome with my 176C, as a remote antenna is necessary with my Jeep.

I have a remote antenna that I use with mine. It pulls in signals much better than the stock one.

However, the LCD is cracked on my V, so am looking for a V as well.

I intend to sell mine, but I want to sell the Touratech mount for it as a package deal.

I have a V which I'm looking to get rid of. If anyone wants it, just offer whatever you want. It's just sitting in the closet unused anyway. It works and is in good condition.

If you can't get one cheaper, something like this would work.

    http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-ga25-bnc-antenna.html

Of course it's probably worth at least half of what the unit is, but you can always use it on something else when the V dies.

That's similar to the one I use for my 176C. Definitely a better signal than the stock antenna.
