Here are some more details: It seems that for side stand feet the constant loading and unloading combined with the vibration of the motorcycle leads to loosening...and loss. We are using Disc-Lock(r) washers on ours. For those unfamiliar, these washers actually, genuinely lock. Not like Nyloc nuts or lock washers these really work! Essentially they are two opposing washers that have corresponding ramps in them and gripping teeth on the outside. The ramps are a steeper pitch than the threads so when the bolt tries to loosen, the ramps prevent it. See the description here: http://www.disc-lock.com/stainless-steel-washer-install In this pic the thread is backing off (by me loosening it) and binding because of the ramps. It gets quite difficult to try to loosen it. They use the same theories as Nord-Lock(r) who have some very interesting comparisons with other bolt "locking" options and better pics and videos. An interesting graph of theirs: http://www.nord-lock.com/default.asp?url=7.16.37 and the good old junker test: http://www.nord-lock.com/default.asp?url=51.16.37 They also seem to be a better method than the threadlocker option as the threads of both don't have to 100% clean. Of course if you want to be 200% sure drip away! So where's the top plate for the MOD side stand foot? It doesn't need one! The combined thickness of the stainless steel Disc-Lock washers is 3mm (1/8"). The strength of those with the machined counter-bore for the side stand foot and the washers (way over-sized on the proto in the pic for trying other options, but will be properly sized on the production units) prevents anything from shifting. Furthermore the bolt head itself actually protrudes slightly over the side stand foot for more strength and support of the washers. 100% solid and secure! Still skeptical? I was. There's no substitute for real world testing after all! So I picked up a hammer and proceeded to hammer the outside over 50 times! Nothing bent, loosened or shifted! You can see the marks on my side stand but not really on the foot because of the glare. It works. These washers are 10 times as expensive as a stainless washer, but it makes this whole thing work like no other! So there it is we've upped the ante ...used our over-thinking ability again ...and will probably increase Disc-Lock(r)'s washer sales too and then how long until the copy cats come out?. Patent pending? They are going into production now (with yet a few more refinements in shape) but won't be ready to ship until after the week after the Vancouver Motorcycle Show Jan. 24th. You can however pick one up at the moto show. There is also a F798GS version for the stock side stand hot on it's heels as it's a mirrored foot. Price will be announced next... Thanks for checkin it out! Dave
Looks great Dave. I've had really good luck with the Nord-lock system on my track car in places where safety wire wasn't an option. This is a perfect example of what it's designed for.
Awesome Thanks! Good to hear the Nord-Locks have worked well for you too. (Track car...sounds fast!) Here's the production version with the properly sized counter-bores for the Disc-Lock(r) washers: Off to the Vancouver Moto Show...more info soon. Thanks for checkin in out! Dave
I have one and installed it yesterday! I have a bunch of pics, but no hosting site yet. If someone wants me to email pics, PM me. If someone wants to post them here, that'd be better. BTW, I painted mine black... Thanks to Dave for the real fast service!
Hey Bushav8r! Thanks for the poke! We had only a few made up in time for the Vancouver Moto Show and they went to locals...then we had some get some mysteriously wonky machining. :huh Cushman (above) was ordering a V2 skid plate so he got the last one I had that was good...until we make more this week. Sorry about the delay on it! In the meantime earlier this week I high-sided my bike (more testing ?:eek1). Muddy tires to acceleration in downhill street corner= It's got some good grinding but it's all intact (same with the bike...and that is another reason it was designed not stick out too far!) Can't say the same for my ribs and my wrist Need to make some stronger MOD ones Lucky the season hasn't really started yet. I'll let you know when they're ready! By the way Cushman...Thanks! ...and you can email me the pics and I'll post 'em. Also what did use to paint yours so I can post that too? Dave
Sounds like you are taking your testing to an exteme! lol Hope your bike isn't too badly damaged and you heal quickly. Maybe you should sell the wonky ones as some sort of limited edition.
sorry to hear about your mishap Dave....was wondering where you have been cause I have not seen you on the road at all....you are OK though right?
Yip I'm OK. Bikes OK too...just character marks I've got two broken ribs and a broken wrist to heal...I still picked up my bike and made it to Pacific Stainless to pick up some hardware after the high-siding action High-sides not recommended. Now I hear all the stories of long it takes ribs to heal I'll be up and ridin in no time! Maybe I'll only be doing the kiddie rides for a while though? Thanks!! Dave
Okay...as promised... The tools it took me to get it on there (Blue locktite and 4mm allen): Kickstand up: Looking down the side: For reference on how close it comes to the swingarm: I used some Rustoleum aluminum primer/etcher and then some Rustoleum black "hammered" texture paint to get it to kinda match the bike. Clearly 2 different shades of black though. Will probably touch it up with a darker black this spring.
Hey thanks Cushman! That looks cool in black...especially with the M carved out! Let's see some pics of the V2 skid plate you got when you get a chance. Dave
Thanks Bushav8r! Glad to hear you like it!! We're just working on getting some more going... See you out there, Dave
Hey Dave, the new bike arrived, and I took your advice, had the MOD skid plate installed right away. It works well with the F800gs coloring and style and I will be installing the SW Motech crash bars, a nice combo. Thanks for suggesting MOD!! Cheers DD
The GL crew recently installed one of our SSF (side stand feet) on their F800 GS: I quote" Finally got the Moto Overland sidestand foot installed on the BMW F800GS. Took all of about two minutes, and the first minute was spent finding the right Allen key. The one-piece design is simple and beautiful, and Moto Overland (Giant Loop's distributor in Canada) uses an innovative lock washer that actually works. I still have a couple of feet of snow on the ground at my house, but it's warm in town - stay tuned for a little test in the squishy desert sand . . . . . . OK, back from my test ride. Works great! Here's a pic of me leaning my full weight on the sidestand while parked in the grass at Dave's place. end quote" Thanks guys!! Just posted in Parallel Universe: " Moto Overland Goodies <hr style="color: rgb(87, 87, 87); background-color: rgb(87, 87, 87);" size="1"> The mailman dropped off my package from Canada today! Inside was MOD's Top Rack and their side stand foot. I want to thank Dave for the help he's provided me over the last week or so. He answered all my questions and gave me several solutions for the top boxes/bags that I was looking to run. I was completely impressed with the fit and finish of both pieces of MOD equipment...looking forward to trying it out. So here's what was sitting on my front porch... And inside was the top rack, side stand foot and the spacers for the Wolfman Expedition Panniers/racks (which I will eventually be running). Installation of the rack couldn't have been simpler, I think it took less than 5 minutes and that included a quick run back in the house for a cold one. Here's a shot with my old Joe Rocket tailbag (currently the only tail bag I own) off my R1150R. Couple shots of the spacers One more look at the bike The side stand foot didn't get installed tonight, I'm giving it a little "black treatment" before putting it on the bike. Since almost everything else on the bike is black I figured I'd put my own touches on the foot. I taped it off, cleaned the surface and then hit it with some primer and 3 coats of black semi gloss paint. It's curing tonight so I'll get some addition pictures of it tomorrow once it gets installed. Here it is taped up and ready to paint Thanks again Dave for all your help! Now I need to get my Wolfman Rolies ordered as well as one of Caribous 34L top boxes. That should give me two solid top box/bag solutions for running solo/two-up." <table id="post15636187" class="tborder" width="100%" align="center" border="0" cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr valign="top"><td class="alt1" id="td_post_15636187" style="border-right: 1px solid rgb(87, 87, 87);"> " Took a few shots for the side stand foot a couple nights ago and just got a chance to upload them tonight.
