Man-o-man... You cant be any more supervised than I am! I get that Krauser Heads question constantly but at this point it's become funny instead of mystifying or annoying. Nothing looks like Krausers, except Krausers! Hey... And you know what? Wirespokes recently dropped by for a two or three day visit and he mentioned that he actually owns a set of Krauser heads that he isn't using! Krauser heads.... Me want!
Yeah, there is one proudly on display, but it's the last one, forever. They don't make them anymore. Molds are done. They do still have the o-ring gasket sets. Plenty. I made sure of that before I left.
Icky! Just shows to go you how one man's elixir is another man's poison...er, or something like that. To me, those CC (Crazy Californians?) valve covers just took the original turn for the worse in valve cover design and turned it for even worse. Glad to hear that the molds are toast. Sorry, but my brain's still wet from an afternoon ride to Windy Pass Mt. St. Helens last night.
hi, i have a valve related cover question for you. both left and ride side of my center valve cover bolts rods are shredded (on the valve block side). the bolts are double sided with reverse groves, the bolts now spin freely and pull any excess metal from the valve block, a proper seal is no longer there. i.e. oil leaks and generally undrivable. Does anyone have any experience with this who can help. short of buying new units, what is the best course of action, re-grove and use bigger bolt rods? then i would have issues with the original outer bolts. any ideas of engineering techniques would be welcomed. 1978 R80/7, newer type valve covers http://www.dimitriandnina.com/P1050044.jpg
About a year and a half ago I saw the display cover at SJBMW and asked if they had a set. They in fact did. Chris indicated that they had gotten several sets from the powdercoater who discovered them in a box under a bench where they had been hidden for many years. I bought a set and waited while the sales guy ground off the powdercoating on the fins. The powdercoating was black gloss rather than the satin finish I think the earlier CC Products covers had. I've yet to install them. The original intent was to put them on the R100GS for their additional robustness but I decided not to since I've dropped the bike and tweaked the crashbars enough times to make removing even the stock covers a hassle. The current plan is to put them on my 83 R100RS Turbo if and when I ever get going on that project. One of my next chores is to repaint two sets of the stock black covers.
To tell the truth, I've never been crazy about the aesthetics of the Cool Covers but they're the heaviest, strongest Airhead valve covers that I've seen, they don't leak, they get rid of those pesky gaskets and they quieten the bike quite a bit. Those boob covers? I don't think so...
They have always been CC product valve covers as far as I know. Personally, I never liked the looks of them. I would think they just about have to get into your cornering clearance. If I remember right, they are heavy but I like the /7 covers over the peanuts for that reason. The /7 covers are a LOT more grind and crash proof. IMO, the most important feature of the CC products covers is that they seal with an O-ring. At least the ones I have seen did. Someone mentioned "original" BMW airhead parts from the dealer going down in quality. I wish I couldn't say that but I have noticed the same thing. Just in the last five or so years, some BMW parts are as crappy as the repo stuff. I suspect it is one and the same. I think they decided at BMWAG to stop ignoring the aftermarket parts scene and start making money from it. I wish they had decided to bring the product up to BMW quality. At least so far, it is just some parts!
I never knew that valve covers would be so hotly debated. How about we change the subject and talk about the best oil to use.
Peanut In ozy I have heard them called cranium covers. Just damaged an orignal G/S cover just ordered a set of craniums.
thanks, that will do the trick it think now i just need to find new stainless bolts and someone that sells the Helicoil threads. cannot find anything on motobins. anyone know where i can find stainless centre bolts and the helicoil's?
