Looking to get in touch with some airhead guys around the baltimore/DC area. Would be nice to get the scoop on near by tech-days, events, rides, etc. Any email lists, websites, or clubs I should be aware of? I am a member of airheads but they dont appear to have any sort of regional specific information...
LLB, We used to be more active I think. A couple of lunches every year, but we don't do that any more. Or they just don't tell me about it.:eek1 The Maryland Airheads are an out growth of the abc or Airheads. We have an Air Marshal. His name is Lance. I'll send you more info in a PM. Lance has been complaining I think about other stuff so maybe it will be good for him to hear from you. You can tell him I gave you his info. We do have one tech day every year that is pretty much the one everybody gets to. It's in the Spring and is called Tech No Barn. There is sometimes another Tech Day somewhere but the one in the Spring is pretty regular. I think a lot of the guys have been doing camp outs and stuff together. Some usually make the Tent Float in Pennsylvania and they go camping at Summit Point and watch the races. My name is Charlie and for some reason everybody knows me. I am new to the Metro Area, Leesburg, VA. I ride a 1981 R100 with Vesco Fairing. Always looking for rides and or activities. Oilheads are nice people, but they seem a little slippery to me. Keep us posted Brother.
JL, There's no date set yet. That gets done later. After a long Winter being cooped up and not being able to ride much. The guys are anxious to get bikes ready for the road so this is the first tech day of the year. Usually at least one more later in the year. I'll send you the info to get on Maryland's List but I forget how to do it so give me a little time to figure it out. Charlie
Gentlemen, Just running this up the flagpole to see if somebody salutes,...my 81 R100 with 100k plus miles has alot of drive line lash. I suspect I am need of a final drive. Since the Bob's cost of back to perfect is about $600, I would like to explore the used/salvaged market. I have a drum brake 32/11 final drive. I have found a pretty nice 32/10 for under $200, and was wondering will I really lose anything in the ratio change? I will be at the Virginia British Motorcycle Club, show and swap meet in Manassas this Sunday in the hopes of spotting a serviceable final drive. Should I remain steadfast for a 32/11 or not be afraid to branch out? Thanks, I'm sorry to go a little off topic, but you boys seem to be knowledgable and local, sort of.
I live in Alexandria and commute into DC via airhead when it's running... I see airheads on the roads from time to time but most of the folks on Beemers are riding oilheads or K-bikes. I'd be up for helping organize rides or Tech days. Two thumbs up for Charlie, he has been a great help with my cantankerous 1982 R65 FrankenBeemer.
Lupo, A change in rear drive ratio is almost always noticeable. You will be going from a 2.91 (I think) to a 3.20 which means new gear is more grunt, more acceleration and the older gear is less rpm for higher speed, considered better on the highway. Either gear will work but your speedo is geared to the gear in the bike now so your speedo will be off. I think getting the 3.20 gear is a good interim fix. You will be able to ride the bike. You can live with an inaccurate speedo. Then as things evolve either find a correct speedo for the new gear or have older gear repaired. Back to the subject; The Maryland Airlist which is a separate email list from the Airheads used to be a part of the ABC which is the Club with the monthly cheapo magazine that has the Oak's articles in it. But now I find no mention of Maryland's list on the ABC site. They recently revamped everything there and it may be a problem with the Web master or we may be getting the Maryland List from another source. I seem to remember something recently about things being changed. So the bottom line at this point is I don't know how you join the Maryland List.. I'm going to write to the group and if that goes through I'll have the info sometime in a day or so. If I can't get a response there I'll write Lance or Henry and see what they have to say. So just stand by for info I guess. I don't know yet what the answer is. I suppose all of you know about the main Airlist. That is the email club with international fame that is handled through Micapeak. You should first be a member of this anyway. You join the Airlist at Micapeak; http://micapeak.com/ You will have to do a number of clicks to find the page you subscribe to the "Airheads". There are a lot of other motorcycle clubs there. There is also the ABC or the Airheads Beemer Club that costs $25 to join. This is recommended. And finally there is BMWMOA which is where all the modern bikes are but the Airheads still have a presence. Oh and I shouldn't forget the IBMWR. They have the most popular Web page flea market. Good to get responses from a few like-minded fellows right off the bat. Although its fall now, maybe I can meet a few of you folks during the spring events. I would suggest some fall rides now (despite those shitty hormone-strung deer all over the place) but my horse is a little beat after 8k of cross-country trip. Now the goal is to find a local fellow to rent garage space from for the big overhaul
OK, I got the info straight. It's been straight for some time but I was confused. There is no page anymore that we go to to enroll in Maryland Airheads. You now write to the Maryland Air Marshall and he will add your name to the Maryland List. This way you will get the emails about Maryland events or nonevents. Maryland Airheads is an out growth of the ABC or Airheads Beemer Club. You need to join ABC technically. However we want you to attend the Tech Days so we will send you the emails. Write to Lance McKay lance.mckay@verizon.net and ask about becoming a Maryland Airhead. To join the ABC, recommended, go to the Web site; https://www.airheads.org/index.php?option=com_acctexp&view=subscribe&Itemid=146 The ABC includes the monthly magazine which most of us consider worth the price because of the Tech Pages written by Oak Okleson. I have recently joined the land of the airheads. I just bought a nice 86 80RT. It is in very good shape, a lot of stuff has been upgraded by the previous owner. Thanks for the mail list info. Need to join the Airhead group. I have garage space, not much but you could ge the job done.
ThisGuy, Get on the Maryland Airlist right away, same goes for the rest of you. We have a Tech Day set for Nov 3. You need to get the info from the list and sign up. They want a list of how many are coming. There is no set price but usually they feed us and ask for donations. Grilled food usually. MrBinDC is thinking about a Tech Day soon. No date yet. This looks like a more informal, no membership stuff, affair. And a Ride afterwords? His palce in Alexandria is big enough for at least 6 or 8 Bikes. Maybe more?
Lance is a great guy,likes the cigars a little much for me tho...You all are lucky that you also have the second most active state as far as events,right next door.Pa.
