Car tyres to fit 17" motorcycle wheels

I have never seen that size here in the states.I'm wondering if that will fit on a stock 17" sportbike rim??.I'm going to build a set of leading link forks for my Vstrom and convert it over to a 17" front and would love to run a Car Tire.

175/55-17 on a 5.5" sportbike rim






It looks to me a little narrow on this rim so maybe a 4.5 - 5" rim may be a more suitable option.

Continental do a spare tyre CTT17. Size is 155/70/17. Would this fit on the GS?

Yes it theortically should but it is speed rated to 130km/h !!! The load rating seems a bit suss ??? It would put it in the 800kg + range ?? Would anyone else like to comfirm this. !!!!

Any options for a 17" front automotive tire? The current 110/70 17" is impossible to find in a square profile.

Its a 4" rim, no? I have no experience, but it seems to fit quite nicely on the triumph 3.5" wide front rim. The tire comes OEM on a vauxhall VX220 which has a 5.5" front rim. So to me, it should at least fit on the BMW rim.

Any of our Euro brothers have direct experience here?

A scan on eBay shows that a 155/70/17 is available in both Good Year and Maxxis as a "mini spare" for the Ford Mustang.
Are theses tires a viable option? They clearly state that they are for temporary use only, but given the application on a hack, I wonder how much abuse they would actually get?

Yes, these are still available. But they are expensive to send to the US or Australia as a single tyre. 2 tyres makes a big difference.

I have not fitted one to a R1200GS rear, but others have.

If you need to know which rim size is needed for a tyre, here's an easy checker for you. http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html A 175/55/17 tyre should be mounted on a 5" up to 6.5" rim.

That's the theory.

In practice, fitting a car tyre to a bike rim works out differently. These tyres struggle to fit on anything wider than a 5.5" bike rim and will happily fit much narrower section wheels.

Rod - Can you provide the diameter of the tires? I'm pretty sure it would mount on my R12GSA rim, but it's the clearance with the swingarm that has me worried. To spend that much $$$ for the tire and shipping only to find it rubbing, well, let's just say my wife would probably beat me.
