I'm interested in using the stock 12GS wiring harness to get power to my GPS. Other threads have said there is a connection near the headstock where the BMW Nav II or III can be plugged in.

Can you confirm where on the bike I would find this plug?

Can I get a compatible plug to power up an aftermarket GPS like the Garmin 276C or Zumo?

Any experience here with trying this?

The plug should be taped up on the left side of the steering head. You have to get a flashlight or something in there to pick it out from all the other black stuff. It will have a cap over it. Get a little screwdriver and pop off the cap. I was gonna order a mating plug and do things the right way but wound up doing what I did on the old bike. I drilled a hole in the plug the size(a little smaller ) of the outside caseing of the gps harness. Push the cap over the GPS harness. Then I stripped the wires about3/8" And cut of a little ( to decrease the guage say(smaller diameter) ThenI tinned them to get them stiff and pushed em into the plug. The red and yellow is hot and the brown is ground. (I think but double check it with a meter) There is one you don't use. Then push the plug back on and I put some ultra flex ( from the aerostitch catalog) To seal and glue the GPS caseing to the plug. It lasted that way on the old bike so we'll see. Good luck

I did the same thing as Rick Danger, 12 months on and no problems at all.
His "guess" as to live and ground wires is correct.
I'm using a Garmin 276C, that circuit stays on for a couple of minutes after the ignition is switched off.

Is that power only when the key is on?

I've had mine on for almost a year this way. So far it works as intended.

JVB - it is switched power but remains on momentarily after the key is turned off, 30 - 40 seconds. I'd like to have it remain on indefinitely and may re-wire mine to the battery directly.

The 276c can be set to have it stay on ,on its own battery power after external power is lost

As does mine or, you can setup the GPS to switch off when external power is lost.
