Contemplating a two stroke engine transplant in to former four stroke machine that has a right side countershaft and thus right side chain drive. Looking for suitable 2T motorcycle engines, either singles or multiple cylinder, that are right side drive. Trying to keep cost reasonable so anything exotic or current may not be the best option. Been looking at air cooled vintage stuff but older liquid cooled stuff could be a consideration as well. Rotax/Bombardier, Husqvarna and Ossa are the few I know off hand. Pleas enlighten me to any that you are aware of. Muchos GrassyAss!
Interesting! I wasn't aware that any of the Japanese manufacturers had done a right side drive. Thanks for that. Ideally I'd like a bit more displacement than a 175 or 200, but beggers can't be choosers.
Ummm couldn't you just flip the wheel around and remake spacers and brake stays? Or respoke the hub to flip it?
can-am 175/250 right side drive. it200 would be my choice, there's alot of power to be unlocked in those motors, and parts are cheap (aside from cylinders/heads....) ... the can-am 250 would be great - it's not as wide as other rotary motors - and they're built pretty stout.. as for flipping to left side, if it's drum brakes, it can be tough - figuring out brake lever to rod crossover or converting to cable rear (easier).... i'm trying to jam a mx175 motor into a puch 175 frame - no mounts match up, and figuring pipe will be a chore.
Or just flip the swing arm over and you're all good, right! Simple and inexpensive (ha!) are hoped for with this project. You can't strip a perfectly good Can-Am Rat, you just can't! Any multi cylinder right side drive 2t's anyone is aware of?
Let me guess ........ Husaberg frame? Consider the exhaust port location (height/angle) so you are sure the exhaust will clear the frame.
Just imagine a 'real' Swedish built Husaberg frame with a 430 or 500 Husqvarna 2T engine swapped in? Huge power, very light due to losing the liquid cooling components, simple mechanics, reliable electrics..... It'd be the bike Husaberg should have built!
I had a Husaberg and wanted to do a 2T conversion. I looked at everything from ultralight motors to rotary engines for go-karts. The tough part was how to marry anything to the Husaberg gearbox to keep the nice wide ratios. A 2T bike engine is a better choice, but 4T frames run close to the front wheel and don't leave much room for a pipe.
