Bought a pre-loved R100RT tank off a European owner and when I open the toolbox, I found a tunnel leading down ... Anyone has any idea what is this and the purpose for it? Stock tanks do not come like this, right?
I wish that it leads to sacrificial virgins! No, the tank's mounting is unaffected. It's like a drain hole that leads all the way out. Ignore the one white spot within the tunnel, that is just styrofoam pop corn. The only thing now is that I have to cover it up and I lost some volume of fuel.
It looks like a mounting hole seen on boats for the flag pole. Could be used as such? Maybe. More 'n likely it's where wires go to radio equipment, like isdt said.

I can lay a thick rubber base for the inside and then cut a small hole to access a power cable to the batt to charge mobile phone etc while riding. The tunnel, while not presenting virgins, may turn out to be a blessing in disguise! Can the latch be keyed? Now it only has a simple allen key nut.
the GS PD has a glovebox in the petrol tank with a keyed latch.so you can definetly make a keyed door and key it alike to your ign key.If it was me i would arrange it so i can open it without a key but make it loackable as well.The gs has to always be opened with a key , on Flickr
I don't think you realize just how sought after a police tank in good shape is... they are not all that common and are handy as hell. Regarding the key, if you can call it that, all of them that I have seen are the same square drive that simply screws into the tab on the tank. kix
I also have a police tank for my project, and my tunnel is a bit smaller and round. I also want to do the phone-charging cord, and also figure out how to key it. If I figure these out I will let you know. Another idea I had was to hide a kill-switch in there, especially if I can key the box, with a quick-release on the wires to make pulling the tank easy.
