One question that did not get asked is how do the BMW final drives hold up to the side loads of a rig, especially the newest bikes?

Haven't the final drives been a sore spot for BWM's for a while without the sidecar. Had problems with mine. Hope to hear the new ones are better?

The final drives hold up well if properly assembled (BMW screwed up a few) and you use a high quality straight wt gearlube, ball bearing like straight 90w none of that skim piss synthetic !!!!!! I heard that Rubber Chicken racing guy won't warranty his final drive overhauls if yo insist in synthetic lube !

Kind of glossing over the problems I have seen.
Never run anything but the BMW brand oil in mine.

Nice Dave, way to sidetrack it down into another oil thread!!!!

I run SWEPCO in mine http://swepcolube.com/products/swepc...pose-gear-lube It's what we use in these:

And when I have trouble getting SWEPCO from the race teams, I run Royal Purple multi-viscosity full syn!!

Well there's my Ural buddy too I first heard no synthetic from a BMW Motorad tech from St Louis in 04 I've been on the GS list since 2000, one can do a bit of googling and find engineers suggesting heavier lubes for anything with roller bearings WTF I don't know much about the r12 final drive but I do own 2 1150s and both have over 100k miles on them but I do shuffle my final drives around a bit neither has a stock one in it but I have never had a final drive issue other than a seal and they are easy !

SIMPLICITY!
For that reason I sold my R1200GSA and got me a R1150GSA, threw out the ABS, and did a few modification for our RTW journey. Milday's V-Strom (solo) had no real problems so far and has now 100.000+km on the meter (there is a Li-Io battery which is sometimes behaving strangely and the Hyperpro rear shock went once broken and got fixed under warranty). My GSA hack has 80+tkm and there have been a few cosmetic issues but nothing major yet.

Care tyre in rear and sidecar, Heidenau K60 front - rides good, looks cool and lasts long.

Maintenance on the Suzi is more difficult but then it is not so often required (i.e. valves) compared to GSA (adjusting valves=piece of cake).

Our real adventure ride in Mali.
