Its official, the world class two day Mauna Kea 200 endurance race is on. After much legal wrangling we got some new sections of forest to use for tight technical trails to bring out the best in riders ability. For those of you that want to be part of the Rock Island Rider trail designing crew, we will start cutting new trails "rain or shine" Sunday Jan 6th...contact Wayne @ 808-966-3033 or Ed @ 808-967-6365. You young riders that want to become a pro off road endurance rider....learn the tricks of the trade by cutting gnarly trails with the Rock Island Riders. ~Gasser~
I am planning on coming to Maui February 2-8. My housing plans fell through. Does anybody have a line on a reasonably priced condo rental in the Kanapali area? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
Yep, Gasser speaks the truth , check out some MK200 veterans at the 2012 TKO, they thought it sounded like a fun event to ride and went for it, 8th place in THE Finals for Knighter.... <IFRAME height=315 src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CwdJC2DHbLk?list=UUJ79-OxEjHfb4BS8sBsv0RA" frameBorder=0 width=560 allowfullscreen></IFRAME>
Rode some single track with the Hilo crew to welcome Santa last Sunday, the present for me was new trails with multiple rooty hill climbs, old trails that I haven't ridden in a bit so they're like new, plus 14 guys I hadn't ridden with in a year + to trade barbs with. Great time, fairly dry, and nothing beats hanging out with the Big Island trail riding crew! Nothing like a 90 Degree turn in the middle of a downhill to make your day fun! Good Times! Mele Kalikimaka!!!
Aloha, I've lived here on Oahu now 2 and a third years and think this has to be the worst of the Hawaiian Islands to ride. Someone please change my mind about that! What are the best rides here? I ride a Kawasaki 650 Versys so do mostly road rides, but can handle a bit of off-roading, nothing too gnarly tho. My favorite spot to ride is from Hanauma Bay to Makapu'u, but that's only about 3 miles or so. Itching for good rides, and no, I'm not military, tho I have friends in the military if that's what it takes to ride some of the best roads! Shootz, Niznack P.S. Anyone down to ride wit me is welcome!
Hi Niznack, I'm also on Oahu, but alas, I don't have a bike at the moment. As you've probably already realized, it's hard to go more than a few miles without making a turn and your almost always in traffic. I would think the ride up to Tanalus and Roundtop would be nice or how about Kaneohe to the North shore. The ride out from the North Shore to Dillingham field and down through the old plantations from Haleiwa past Dole to Scofield, nice open space. Isn't there an offroad park and races at Kahuku. If you have some time, I was told by Young Brothers that you can ship a bike to the Big Island for $165 (?) each way and if you stay in Kailua Kona, the Islander Inn is $59 per night. Most of the guys that post here are on the Big Island and it seems they know how to have FUN. Just a few thoughts. Monty
Yeah Rummy, I've tried all those rides. They're ok. Tantalus may be the best, but there are so many switchbacks, tourists, bicycles, random chickens that it's almost too dangerous to ride. I do have some great goPro video of going up and coming back down that one. Yeah, most the time I just get stuck in traffic, wah wah wah wwwwaaaaahhh! That's a good idea though to ship the bike to another island, although all said and done it sounds expensive. Maybe I'll have to bite the bullet and just do it. Mahalo Niznack
Back until I get another opportunity to take the Fam someplace exciting again anyway! Fantastic opportunity but it's great to be home!!! MK200 in May, are you coming???? How you doing Sam?
Thanks for the offer, but I am leading a small group across the Pony Express Trail Utah, Nevada during that timeline. I have a little DRZ 400 for that and It still to big a bike for there. I think you have the perfect bike for your environment... 200 smoker; what's that thing like 40 HP? Please give my regards to your Mom,
Took a leisurely cruise around south island. Some nice scenery out there. Here's a few pics from the Kahuku section of Volcanoes National Park. Nice hiking trails and great place for a picnic.
Hey Thumper, what part of the island is that? I'm dying to head east and do some riding with you guys over there. Turns out, this running a business stuff keeps you busy! Speaking of business, we are moving into our new shop this weekend. It's located in Kaloko Palms in the new industrial area near Costco Kona. If you're ever passing through the west side feel free to stop by, cold beers will be in da fridge Once we get settled in, I'd love to host some sort of dual sport gatherings or whatever to have a place for everyone to hang and/or use it as a meeting place before a ride. Lemme know what you think.
Sounds close to Kiser, not entirely familiar with the Kona side but know it's a bit of a butt buzz from here for me. Come on over this way, Saturday is a MK200 trail day (I can't help because that's the wife's day) Sunday is a ride day. PM sent
[/CENTER Rock Island Riders Benchrace Poem ~~~~~~~~~~~ They were getting old and paunchy And there heads were balding fast, As they sat around the pits BBQing, Telling big crash stories of the past. Of a race that they once raced in And the trails that they had done, In their exploits with other riders; They were off road heroes, every one. And 'tho to the street riders Their off road tales became a joke, But their new off road riders listened quietly For they knew where of the trail cutters spoke. But we'll hear their tales get longer, For all the trails they cut that day, And their machete swings a little faster To make the Mauna Kea 200 riders day. ~Gasser~ This year the Rock Island Riders will also have a "Tourist Class" ride around the Mauna Kea volcano mountain. $50.00 entry fee...no trophies awarded...this is just a ride after all contestants have left the starting line for the the second half of the two day Mauna Kea 200 and "KING OF THE MOUNTAIN" Hare & Hound race. I stopped by Hawaii Adventure Tours in Kona and talked to Jason and he said can rent some motorcycles to ride this Tourist Class...don't miss this cool tourist ride in Hawaii, give Jason a call for details. Within the next few days the RIR's will have downloadable MK200 entry forms and full information about this world class endurance race at> mk200.com A Hui Ho
Ain't Happening, No Can Brah, All Pau, what ever... Bottom Line is that the Rock Island Riders decided to pull the plug, everything was looking good until about two weeks ago and then some new requirements were added and the boyz said "Nuff Already!" Be on the look out for a DS Ride with Gumption or something else, FUKK!!!! PS: Nice shot of Erickson Gasser!!!! Did I take that with one hand?!?!?!?
