Taking a week-long trip in June from Charlotte, NC up toward Gettysburg. However, the objective isn't the destination but to enjoy the ride along the way. With that in mind, I'd like to hear your road recommendations - those roads you loved the first time you rode them and would/did ride again and again. Just some background - I don't care for switchbacks but prefer tristies and sweepers if possible. I ride a ST1100 so the bike is very capable - probably more so than I am at this time. As I begin the logistics of this trip, I'd welcome road suggestions and any other suggestions you'd care to offer (inexpensive lodging, good places to eat, etc). Thanks in advance!
For your West Virginia leg of the trip - my website: www.RidingWV.com You would probably be most interested in the "Street Rides", "Backroads Rides", and "Destinations" pages. Hope you find some useful info. It is a work in progress, so some pages are still empty. Have a safe and fun trip.
route 11 is one you should avoid......... The roads paralleling 81 through VA such as route 42 can be a fun ride. Enjoy the trip.
In WV County rd 1, aka Back Mountain Road from Marlinton, to Cass, then to Durbin. 16 is good too, East West routes tend to be better for curves. I would say Smoke Hole Rd but it does not exist.
Watch out for the full grown bears on 220, they've been treating 220 like an ATM machine. I remember 8 years ago you could treat 220 like the autobahn.
The first rule of Smoke Hole Rd is you don't speak of Smoke Hole Rd. I know Rt 20 is fun too, and it goes by Rella's
Of course there's the Parkway and Skyline Dr too... We live near Winston and I grew up right outside of Gettysburg. My favorite route up is either 219 or 220. They're both decent roads, plenty of great roads to explore off of them, and if you need to make up time, you can just stick to the Eisenhower highways or jump on 81 and put the feedbag on. Up towards Gettysburg, the area known as Catocin Mountain has a bunch of great roads too- that's right around Turmont, MD.
