I've had this itch for awhile, pondering different routes and alternatives, potential partners to share in my misguided ways and often dead ends, and finally decided to just pull the trigger and see what happens. After a lifetime of exploring the Uinta's by foot, skis, boot and motorcycles, I wanted to see if I could circumnavigate the entire place with the least amount of slab possible. To make it more interesting, I decided to solo it without putting much thought into the little things like fuel range or limited daylight... Oh well, it's taking chances that make things exciting right? Plus, the Uinta's aren't that remote right??? So for those that aren't from Utardia, you can learn a little about this fine mountain range here. It's a cool place, with ton's of recreation to fit whatever fetish you may have. So I figured I'd head to the north side and come home on the south side. For reasons I won't discuss here, I got off to a little bit of a late start, which would bite my ass later. Despite spending my entire life around Hayden Peak I still find it photo worthy So i slabbed it over the Mirror Lake Highway to the North Slope road. I stopped to stretch my legs and consult the map a bit at the ranger station. I knew from previous rides the first part of this would be high speed dirt and didn't want to miss my planned cut-off. The nice girl there told me to be careful as one section had "really bad" roads. I took note and took off. First stop was at Elizabeth Pass, the point where I would stop seeing RV's larger than my condo. From there linking up a variety of roads varying between dense Aspen forest, high mountain parks and some decent views I think I could live in this place... Crossed into and out of Wyoming a few times. Had an important refueling stop as well Headed down the Henry's Fork...Kings Peak is out there somewhere... And going through West Beaver headed towards Hole-in-the-Rock Then out past Spirit Lake and Sheep creek and down into Flaming Gorge on fumes for gas. It was 2 PM but I figured I had 6 hours of daylight left and was just shy of halfway home...No problem right? I really wanted to cross the Brown's Park swinging bridge but rumor said it was still out of service from a tractor violation... So I settled to Taylor Flats. But first I cut the corner for more dirt and went out the Goslin Road and Past Ford Spring Across the Bridge and out Taylor Flat towards Crouse Canyon I finally rolled onto the Diamond Mountain rim a bit later than I hoped. Taylor Flat road had taken some serious abuse from the recent epic rain events of August (Utah is a desert remember!!) When I rolled into Vernal for gas I remembered my Grandfather telling me something about discretion being the better part of valor and accepted defeat. I would slab it home the 125 miles to Park City. It got dark 45 mins later and late night riding on Hwy 40 with active deer all over was no fun. Home at 10:30PM to a beer and a hot tub. All said the damage done was 446 miles, 12:25 hours in the saddle and a plan to finish this thing right next summer... Here is a Google Earth Screen shot, PM me if you want the GPX file...
