AZ. Ride Hike Ride

This thread is for those riders who also like to use their legs, heart and lungs to enjoy the areas that we are denied from riding. The state has hundreds of trailheads that are accessed by dirt or remote 4x4 roads that are slow going in a 4 four wheeled vehicle.

The Hike can be a mile or two, or a multiday trek.

A hundred yard walk to an overlook is not a hike.

Looking for a picture rich thread with a good descriptions of the trail/terrain.

Breath deep, walk hard, then ride home. Happy trails!

I climbed Moby Dick, a 700' route with a girl friend in 1990.













Looking back at Knob hill in Dragoon Mountain Ranch.
Back in the day you could turn onto Horse ranch road and drive fourteen miles due west to the Stronghold, now it is thirteen more miles of pavement south, then east and back north on dirt for twenty.

Isn't Rockefeller dome where what's my line is? AKA chicken head highway?

The big wall possess one of the most popular routes.







The classic Whats my line on Cochise Dome.







I heard voices earlier.







I could see and hear a party of three doing the route.







The last time I did this route was around 1996.
Talking with a pair of hikers that came from the east side I found out the trio were from Norway.

Whats my line is on Cochise Dome across the drain from Rockefeller.

I have been walking on the north slope in the shade.
The rain and snow over the last few days has brightened up the mountain side.

So off the trail I go bushwhacking up until I can get the shots I want.

After regaining the tread, I rambled on back down towards the bike.












On the way back I chatted with two hikers and two climbers, all from Alaska. Back on the bike the shadows were growing.







Four miles of hiking, sixty six miles of riding, five hours.

Subscribed. There are several trails off of 4 peaks road that I am interseted in riding/hiking. My first will be 4 peaks road to hike Brown's peak in the spring.

There is an old Cowboy saying " Why walk when you can Ride ". There are even a couple of books by that title.
However that was before anyone ever heard of... or even dreamed of Wilderness Area's.

Hiked there a couple years ago while visiting family in Cochise, I would love to get back out there for some adv riding...

How about Devil's Bridge up in Sedona? Hit the dirt in Prescott, run up and over to Jerome, and down to Tuzigoot. From there, take the dirt to the trailhead for the Bridge.

It would be about a 1/4 maybe 1/2 mile hike. And depending on River level, you may get your feet wet. You can see the ovens across the river as you drop down towards Cochran.

In between jobs, great weather, and the knowledge that an access road that had been closed for over five years had been rerouted, I packed up and headed out for a hike.

A bit of riding first.








Never fails.









The first forty one miles netted four miles of pavement. Topped of the fuel, then rolled towards the east side of the valley looking to add more dirt to the inventory.

Shut down at the Klump ranch, no access. No problem, I pointed it west to reach a twelve mile section of pavement. Turned off on one of my favorite dirt highways and sped through the high grasslands to the hills.

Blissfully rolling along, I round a bend in the road and am reminded of so much that is so wrong!

Having spent many nights in this range over the last two and a half decades, and knowing how little use this canyon has had due to the road being closed, I thought a little about the critters. A good nights worth of sleep it was.








Sunshine at 08:45, instant fifteen degree increase.




Warming up and exploring a larger perimeter of my camp I checked out the suspended waterline spanning across the canyon.




The reason for the road up here. The line went to a cement tank thirty yards away that had a 1957 date.
