DRZ400 Who's got one? Let's see it.

Hi All,

I just picked up a 2008 Suzuki DRZ400s

Fitted a Screen and a GPS,

Interested in seeing what mods you blokes have done to yours.

Hints and tips etc.

I want a bigger tank, which one?

Saddle bags and rack or loop type rear bag or what?

Ok I'll start with a shot on mine...

This is mine.

Safari Tank, HD Suspension, MRD exhaust, B&B Bash Plate, Engine Case Protection, Heated Grips and heaps of little mods to make it usable for me.

I had the suspension done ( stiffer springs and vlaving to suit)

B&B side covers
gearing 15/47 soon to be 15/44
Eagle 40 cm screen
steel pony panniers bags over dirt bagz frames
Rolie bag on rear carrier
Mitas E09 tyres
small LED blinkers at rear

Suzuki hasn't changed them in years, so I see no real reason why they won't have a 2101 model. I wonder what colour it will be? probably Yellow.

What's the thinking on Safari tanks... 17 or 28 litres?
I was thinking about the 17lt and maybe a 4lt Rotopax for when I need more range.
What are the Clarke and IMS tanks like?

Also I can't decide on a luggage system, Giant Loop or Panniers like Wolfman, Andy Strapz.
What do you reckon?

You may aswell get the 28litre, you don't have to fill it. the difference in weight between the 17 and 28 Empty would be about 1 kg at the most.

The 2101 model will be yellow , of course (or black or blue). Still no 6 speed box though.

I have the 28 L tank on my bike. I found that a minor off bent the strut that supports the tank wings. Without it the manufacturer says the wings bend inwards and could rub on the radiators eventually.

17 L is not enough for big trips, but you could use a fuel cell bag that you roll up when empty. Adventure Moto sell them.

I agree if you are a buying a Safari tank go for the 28L, but if you are on a budget you can get the IMS tank from just Gas Tanks for about $300 delivered, I have had the IMS tank for nearly 2 years no worries.
A good idea to put loctite on your front sprocket nut after changing your sprocket, the frames on the DRZ are good and strong, you can carry a lot weight without any drama.

Not so shiny now but 37000 km and still going strong.

The only dramas so far was a leaky sprocket seal (easy fix), the ignition key packed it in ( bypassed the switch and was on the move again) and sprocket nut came loose.

Love it BUT, when I'm on the 990 I never think of the DRZ.

When I'm on the DRZ I allways think of the 990.

17lt Safari tank, heavier springs + revalved, gold valves forks, renthal bars and risers, Dep 3 pipe with Staintune header (long story), pivot pegs, Stezs pegs, B&B rack, Whipps bash plate, CFC side case savers, B&B case saver, B&B frame guards, Whipps shark fin (until it fell off last ride) Force radiator guards, Acerbis after market headlight., EGO bark busters, braided front brake line, custom made kipo fork leg protectors (PVC pipe) LED tail light and LED blinkers (only just put them on after about 4 years with none, the plod have got me worried)

If I had my time again I would get the 17 litre tank. All the guys that have purchased the 17 around here can fit 20+ litres in theirs.
I can fit 33 litres in my 28 litre tank! Its bloody huge!

I highsided the DRZ at speed a few months back and the tank suffered no damage. Even the alloy brace survived. There was a small mark where the tank hit the B&B radiator gaurd and that was it!

Yep, funny thing about the capacity of Safari tanks.

I put 19.5 l in my 17L when it was new, with a gap of maybe another 1L.

Another mate Paul "Desertwind" from Mt Isa reckons he gets 47L in his 40L KTM 990 tanks.

I don't think anyone complains,

I haven't got a pic of a 400 but am thinking of buying one. Currently have a 250 but want to do some big trips, is the 400 up to it or should I be looking at 650's ??

Thanks for the advice Johmarq and your assistance 59DEN with photos.

The bike has not been used much to date, but I plan some long trips over summer. I need to harden up before the APC rally next year. The DRZ with all the gear attached feels like a barge in sand. Heaven help those guys with 990s when the going gets tight.

Reasons for lack of use: My WRF290 is better suited to trail riding locally when I ride with DSMRA; I am self employed and busy, so taking time off to swan around on a bike takes a lot of planning; my wife thinks she is a dirt bike widow already.

Just an observation: (or 3)
1) check out the cool gear in other bloke's sheds. Mine looks like a snow ski rental shop!
2) the 17L and 28L Safari tanks look similar to me.
3) Someone told me that the rear subframe on the DRZ would not hold much weight. Those WA riders seem to disprove that idea.
