This is my first sidecar back in the mid-80's. Stock steering geometry so it was a handful. Fun tho! I sold them separately in 1990.

About 5 years ago I was at the Seattle IMS show and saw this in the local show bike section:

He color-matched his Harley to my California sidecar. Pretty cool to see it again.

Bought this on Ebay and had it shipped from AZ.
Was pleasantly surprised at that condition and the whole transaction.

Triumph Bonneville to the Arctic Circle 4 Feb 2014 Ride Report



I have been asked for a Ride Report about the trip that I undertook this in January with a very good lifelong friend.

Way back a year ago I was in a conundrum in that I had always been fascinated with Motorcycles and Sidecars. I have been riding for about 25 years and undertaken a few long journeys and enjoyed them all particularly in later life as my son came along with me on the back of my then Triumph Bonneville 750. He grew up and now rides himself.

I started to do some research and this is the best piece of advice I can give anyone.

1. Do your Research
2. Time spent in reconnaissance is never wasted so Recce where you want to go using all the social media available, ie GOOGLE Maps and plan.
3. Travel with a partner that you know well, very well.

Bike and Sidecar

The bike I chose was a Triumph Bonneville and here is my reasoning;

1. I wanted a bike that was familiar, powerful and iconic to many people and with a big heart. The Bonnie ticks all these boxes over and over for me anyway. People would come over time and again to talk to me about the rig.
2. The bike is simple enough and with few faults and those issues that it has such as fuel tank range I can live with.
3. Oh and I just like Bonnies.

I consulted F2 Motorcycles this company is the importer of Urals into the UK. I had a frank and open talk with the owner and he was superb in that he explained the Pros and Cons of those equally iconic rigs. What I did come away with was that I wanted a strong, tough sidecar that could take the kind of hammer that rough roads and conditions can meet out.
The Ural sidecar is all of those things. I wait ed until a rig was sourced for me.
Once a Ural sidecar was found I went to Motopodd sidecars again in the UK. Motopodd fitted the sidecar and I gave me much needed training, this set me up admirably. I like dealing with personable small British companies that are passionate about the work they do and do it very well. Rodd knows his stuff and is a very nice chap to boot.
The RECCE. I went on a holiday to Lapland with my children and so was able to double check my equipment. I also observed the speeds that were possible when Ice studs were fitted to tyres on icy roads.

Modifications and Key equipment

1. The tyres that I chose were one that I have used before and am very happy with and these are Heidenau K60 Scouts M&S. These have good chunky tread and so able to receive Ice studs. I also bought a set of snow chains for the rear tyre of the rig but had to adapt and widen them. These were bought from a Ural dealing in Europe. I made a set for the front tyre but did not need to use any of them.
2. I fitted a spare rear tyre to the Rig with brake disc fitted, and took along a Slime electric pump.
3. Spare Car battery and jump leads for difficult starting.
4. Bike and sidecar cover.
5. Tow steel cable( can be used to lock the rig up).
6. Fuel Cans 10ltr x2 on the outside of the rig 1x 5ltr on the pannier. No worries on fuel.
7. Top quality handlebar muffs low tech and worked superbly. Reliance on electrical power Nil.
8. Small windshield as I was doing low speeds 50mph .
9. Maps, my Satnav froze. Never rely on the SATNAV.
10. Ethanol was added to my tank along the way, my Carbs still froze though.

Clothing and Equipment

1. Helmet with heated visor imported from America, my only Electrical item and crucial.
2. Now this is important. I am a size 9 but needed a size 11 boots. I wore good quality snow boots with a thick felt lining. Why. Two pairs of thick thermal socks, Gortex socks and toe heat pads( These last 8hrs) ensured my feet were toasty.
3. Two neck tubes plus a fleece balaclava.
4. Winter Frank Thomas lined Jacket and trousers. Kit needs to be loose.
5. Layed clothing as well as Buffalo Fleece jacket.
6. Cooking Kit and brew Kit. Nothing like a cup of tea to keep it real.
7. Flask
8. Substantial tool kit, spare plugs, Jack.

Time and distance

Total distance travelled was 2300 miles. 1800 were on iced roads

1. Ferry Harwich to Esberg (overnight)
2. Esberg to Fredrickhaven Denmark. (overnight)
3. Gothenberg to Jokkmokk staying in hotels along the way. All pre booked with garages except one.
4. Initially I travelled 300 miles a day achievable but in retrospect these distances were a little extreme. Ok if you Co pilot can drive, but mine could not.

In Summary

A great trip, I did break down with Iced carbs three times. I had excellent Breakdown cover which I used, I did meet superb people along the way who helped us out. The breakdowns enhanced my trip rather than hindering it. The people of Sweden were incredibly kind and amiable. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the link. Loved reading it. Taking a few trips with my Daughter this summer. Nothing like yours, but I'm very excited. One reason I'm causing issues on the hack side now is so I can take both.
