Hi All Just fitted the new Zumo. Very cool. It's only running on it's own power at the moment because I want to wire it up to the BMW power socket under the seat. I purchased the usual sized cig lighter male plug and low and behold it wouldn't fit. :dogI didn't realise that I needed the smaller/BMW male plug. Next time I will look! Help needed. I'm and not an electrician so will this plug in system work? I know I need to connect a live (red) and an earth (black) but I have never seen the BMW male plug and therefore I don't know if they allow for this. The other way I guess is straight to the red & black battery terminals. OR PLEASE RECOMMEND ANOTHER WAY TO CONNECT THE ZUMO. I WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR CLEAR DETAILS AS I AM NOT VERY BRIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO WIRING THINGS UP. Thanks
Here is what I would do: 1. Take the Garmin power cord supplied and cut away the cigarette lighter plug 2. Open up and examine the plug 3. Note which wire was attached to the outer ring and which to the inner pointy thing (forgive the technical terms please) 4. Get an inline fuse (12v) and fuse holder/box from your automotive/hardware store 5. Attach the fuse holder/box to the wire that originally went to the inner pointy thingy of the cigarette plug 6. Hook up the fused wire to the red battery terminal and the other wire to the other terminal. that's it! The reason why I don't like to use the accessory socket is because the Canbus deactivates it when the bike is switched off for a certain period of time. In some cases the GPS is also reboot when you use this plug and start the bike up. Very annoying. You also want the accessory plug free for stuff like compressors, lamps and hairdryers (if you're that way inclined).
I'd be interested in hearing a mini review of the zumo after you've had a chance to get used to it. If you are so inclined....
oh... won't you please post some pics of the Zumo on your bike I'd very much like to see where you decided to mount it
Now..I'm no expert but my Quest had a very..very small voltage regulater/limiter in the plug...without it..boom..no more GPS.. Seeing the Zumo has a battery as well I'm going to assume it has one as well ..so don't forget that little electronic gadget when prying open the speaker/plug I'd just order one from TT/Cyoactive and keep your regular plug for your Auto
This will only work if the Zumo takes 12 volt. Sometimes the garmin plug has a voltage limeter in it and it runs on 6volts. Double check your voltage requirements. Your easiest solution would just to buy an adapter cable here http://www.powerletproducts.com/products/cables.php
Hi The Zumo came with both car power lead and the one for the bike. It's just that I fitted a new cig lighter male plug to the end of the bike power lead in anticipation of just connecting it to the bike via the socket under the seat. Which was wrong. SHOULD I ORDER THE BMW MALE PLUG? The bike power lead does have a built in fuse (in line). I will try and post a pick but in the mean time I fitted it on the lefthand bar, using the RAM mount included with the Zumo, just below the crossbar. I angled the ball mount towards the hand guard which gave me the perfect angle so when ridding I can use the touch sceen and the unit "appears" to be next to the speedo, if you know what I mean. As a comparison I,ve only used Garmin marine products before, which are great, but the wife has a sat nav in her car so we fitted the Zumo in as a test and it worked just as well/fast as the factory unit in her car. That unit cost 3 times more than the Zumo!!!
The GSA has a OEM loom already in place for wiring GPS - ask dealer for location as it is taped below the instruments. If you want to go the plug route yes best would be to get the BMW male plug or the same thing made by Hella for much cheaper!
I have got to give you a little flak here. You live on Guernsey and you need a GPS? I just thought it was kind of funny. Seriously though, try and hardwire the zumo to the battery instead of using a plug. If you really want to run it to a plug, then spend a few Euro and buy a BMW type plug. Here is an adapter for 9.95 Euro. Or get the BMW type plug for 3.95 Euro
Hi Your right it's a very small island but the Zumo is so shiny. Gollum had his ring...... I did get lost once, 10 seconds later I was back on track. It's for FRANCE and further.
Does the bike power wire that came with the unit have a positive and Negative wire at the end? If so...that's fine and you can just connect it to a BMW/SAE/Standard..or any other style of plug you desire to make it work. What was said above is DO NOT cut any plug off the end of a battery powered garmin cord..as there is a voltage limiter inside these designed to keep your GPS from getting fried from 12volts. Your BMW or Standard plugs will most likely have another fuse installed in them as well..just make sure you have the same size fuse in the plug as you have in your cord or smaller
My Garmin 60CS runs straight off the battery. No fuse, no regulator, no problem, nada. It has done so for 25 months and it works just peachy
Just sitting here killing time while I wait for the courier to deliver my Zumo. (aint the internet wondeful I can see when it should arrive on line ) Having downloaded the manuals in advance I intend to connect the power lead to my Centach Fuse box which is already on the bike, although as the supplied lead has an inline fuse you could simply connect it directly to the battery. The bike has a dedicated GPS feed which you can find taped to the left side of the head stock, not sure if you can buy the required plug for this from your dealer or not, you could of course just remove the plug and make a connection direct to the wires. Personally I prefer using a seperate fuse box like the Centacjh for all aftermarket electrical connections, keeps things neat and tidy and seperates items from the bikes canbus system. As for where to mount it I already have a Migsel mount fitted so should be a straight forward connection above the clocks.
That's because it requires 12 volts. If it were a 4,6 or 8 volt GPS you would have fried it the first day you turned it on
Hi All Thanks for the information. So it is simple. I can just go staight to the battery if I want but to be on the safer side I should go via a seperate fuse box. Thanks all. Ash (Clueless when it comes to eletrics) Lacey
Hi, Since the powerlead has an inline fuse, there is no need to go thru a separate fusebox. However if you are adding other electronics in the future, get a Centec or Blue Seas or other fusebox, wire it in,then any future wiring will be simple. JR356
As long as there is a fuse in line you can go directly to the battery..but as long as your starting to add farkles..it may be more desirable to go to a relay switched by your key..so it turns off when you shut down the bike. The Zumo has a Battery so you can still do calculations without leaving the key on. It would be very simple for you to add this..but you stated your not comfy with electrics. Your dealer should be able to add a Relay for you for under 20.00..and you won't have to worry about warranty shit if something goes south with the electrics somewhere else.. G
My Zumo arrived yesterday when I was out of town. Was playing with it this morning and wondering how best to attach it to the GS. I was saving the car plug for the car. In view of all of the options I think I am going to take the power cord to my dealer when I get my yearly service (in december) and have them add power. The RAM mount looks like I'll need to cut one or more of the ties that hold the clutch cable to the handle bars. Any thoughts on this? Where best to attach it to the handle bars? Closer to the head stock looks like the best option.
Here you go, it just arrived this morning as the courier got lost yesterday and decided he needed to go back to the depot at quitting time. Freshly fitted to my existing Migsel mount and wired for action. First impressions are this is a superb piece of kit and the packaged accessories make it brilliant value for money. Off out to play with it!
