I have my own little shop space where I work on my bikes, and sometimes I help people out with their bikes.

I would like to extend the following offer to the ADV community:

You are welcome to bring your bike over to my shop, and I will help you work on it. No charge or expectation of payment. What I get is the satisfaction of helping you have the confidence to tackle fixing your bike yourself.

I help you through the job, and you can use my tools, space, and shop chemicals.

I don't have a proper tire changer. That said, I can do tires with tire levers and patience. I still need to pick up some better tools for tires.

I have started taking tires to Crazy Ted. He is in VB, and will change them for $15 if you have the wheel off. $25 if he takes the wheel off. It's a hell of a good deal.

I just checked your profile, and I see you have a GS1200. Your tires would be a challenge for my limited tire toolset. If you want to try though, bring some tire lube(I don't have any) and we'll give it a go.

I've still got a few miles left to squeeze out of the tires. I am, however, quite curious about your shop. What is it? Where is it? Can I come by to say hello?

The shop is the garage at my house. Sadly no garage door anymore, but you can get a bike through the back door. Coming by to say hello is fine.

I used to install garage doors.

New muffler bearing, and muffler bearing retainer bolts got installed in the XT.

Today's activities:

I am working on installing heated grips.

I made sure to clearance the back of the bracket so that it sits nice and flat on the clamp:

My rear wheel was pretty shot after several years of hard use. The rear wheel is a known weak spot(if the bike gets used hard) on an otherwise solid bike.

Blue dots show the broken spokes.


I bought a new rim to replace the dented and bent original rim and got Buchanon's to make me some 8 guage stainless spokes to replace the stock spokes.

All set for lacing:


Note the size difference in the new spokes vs. the old spokes. These should handle a bit more abuse


The lacing went smoothly


I don't own a truing stand, so I made one from some scrap wood


A dial indicator means I can get a good result. I ended up with +/- 0.5mm runout . The manual says +/- 2mm is ok.


My wheel takes special tabbed washers to keep the sprocket bolts from loosening. I just drilled the nuts for safety wire instead.

I ordered a handlebar conversion kit (speglierusa lsl handlebar conversion ) for my sv1000s. I should get them in around the first week in January. If u would be down in trying it out I would love the help. Comes with SS brake line in the front and rest of cables will fit. It involves that and installing new grips. Also need to adjust my levers ( gear shift and rear brake ) as I dropped my foot pegs about 1 inch and now the angle is awful. So let me know man, would prolly save me around 400 bucks. Plus i would love the knowledge.
