They really don't know yet. They think it might be the connecting rods and they have ordered in new ones. Everything else looks to be in really good shape. Its a mystery... :confused

He tried to pin it down with his stethascope. It sounded like it was coming from the left side. It started after the engine hit 4 bars and the oil pressure came down. At first we thought it was a bad cam chain tensioner...replaced it...no change. Next, a valve device that dumps excess oil pressure when needed...replaced...no change. So...we get to look at all the parts now.

    Scary...

If the bike is under warrenty, why didn't they just ask for a new engine to be drop shipped to the shop? Unless they were REALY bored and wanted to train a new tech?

It is under warranty and I suppose a new motor would be the final fix. I'm willing to let them try and get to the bottom of the problem as long as they stand by their repairs. I've known the owner's for a long time and I trust them.

Did he go with the stock cam chain tensioner? If he did it will not stop the noise. BMW has a new type that’s works like a hydraulic lifter. (Pumps up with oil)

When my GS was 11 months old I started it up one morning and it went gink, gink,gink...
    I shut the engine down....
Then I reasoned that I just imagined the sound so I started the engine again, gink, gink, gink, and it was rev related...
I shut the engine off again...
I checked the oil, I visually checked over the whole bike... nothing was wrong.
So I started the engine again, gink, gink, gink, and since 3 times is a charm I shut it down and called the dealer...
I offered to let them hear the gink, gink, gink, but they really didn't want to...
The tow truck came, the bike went away for a month.
When I picked it back up, it had a new engine stuffed in the frame...
Such is the power of gink, gink, gink,

    They all work like that.

The new ones are a one piece assy with a valve that prevents it from going empty when the engine is shut off.

Yes...Yes. It was a progressive attack. Think I'll press today for a new motor. Wonder if they could cram the new Triumph 3 cyl, 2300CC beast into the GS frame... :nod

Mine makes a pronounced knocking sound on the left side when it's at operating temperature. Sit in traffic for any length of time and it gets worse. A local dealer told me the valves were too loose. They tightened 'em up and the engine is indeed quieter generally, but the knock is still there, although maybe not quite as bad as before.

I know these engine make noise, especially when hot, but this knock wears on my mind. It just doesn't seem right. :dunno

Let us know if your dealer finds the culprit.
