Nothing wrong with that tyre at all if you are fitting a tube............good idea to try to get used to fitting tyres with big rubber mallet rather than tyre irons though, as this will mean damage to bead and pinched tubes are easily avoided.

Using tire irons works. Period. Using a rubber mallet works too. You can tear a bead with tire irons. You can kink and destroy a bead with a rubber mallet.
Tire irons fit in most people's bike tool kits. Rubber mallets usually don't.

It's no great shakes to learn how to properly mount a tire, using the same tools that they guys in the shops do. Next time you're going to change a tire, put the old one back on a few times for practice. It will make a difference in your confidence.
Pinching tubes comes with the territory, and I still do it occasionally, despite 23 years in the biz.

To the original question: using that tire with a tube is probably okay, but running it tubeless is a no-go.

Thanks again for all the advice. I've mounted more than a few dirt bike tires with fair success. I know the right way to do it. As I said, this tire is real low profile and very stiff. There's not enough sidewall to get a foot or knee on to keep the bead on the opposite side in the rim center when getting the last bit over the rim. I ended up using a clamp to keep it in place, and it popped right on. I haven't decided if I'll run it or not. I'm sure it's 99% ok, but the worrywart in me obsesses about that last 1%.

It might be best for you to bite the bullet and toss the tire, chalking it up to an expensive learning experience. Confidence in your tires is damned important when riding, and having a niggling thought in the back of your head isn't safe. It's not fun, either, and that's why we ride, isn't it?

These are handy, especially when working alone.

In case anyone needs to hear the epilogue of this sad tale... I ordered a new tire and it arrived today. The new tire practically jumped on the rim, it went on so easily. I'd like to think the other tire was a dud, or maybe I'm getting better at this. In any case, all's well that ends well.

It's good to hear a happy ending.

Not sure that wasting money on a new tyre possibly due to nonsense posted on here suggesting very minor damage is likely to make a tyre unsafe, is much of a happy ending?

Peace of mind is a happy ending, and you can't improve that with a rubber mallet.

If the guy riding that tire is at peace with it, it's a happy ending.
