Bmw r 1150 gs

Hi,

I´m from Portugal so my english will not be perfect!

Hope you understand!

I´m new for here, i have a R75/5 from 71 and a K100RS from 87. These two were until now my travelling bikes! :-)

I´m posting here because i´m looking for an 1150 GS, a bike that i appreciate very much and that is less expensive than 1200 GS to buy! (this is an important point too!)

I would like have some help to know what i should see or looking for when i go see one of these bikes.

What kind of problems have these bikes?

Thank you very much and good curves!

changed fuel pump
injector nozzle(?) left side
changed TPS
changed quick disconnect
changed spark plug cap
fuel line inside the tank ruptured
have a small weep from underside...(have yet to find where it is coming from)

Here's what I've done on my 2001 that is garaged

Brake lines replaced
Started replaced
Quick disconnects

I know that I will eventually have to replace/rebuild:
Clutch line and slave cylinder
Fuel lines

Outside of that, it's been tires, oil, brakes and air filters.

parts replaced on '01 1150GS

2001 1150GS with 50,000 miles (very little riding the first 3-4 years). I'm the original owner. It been ridden 2-up and loaded in all kinds of weather except snow, including lots of cross coutnry and mountain riding for about 60% of the miles. It's in the garage when not on the road. Very reliable.

Throttle cable - changed under warranty at 2400 miles.
Fuel line quick disconnects - changed to metal before the plastic ones could break at 6,000 miles
Shocks - changed to Wilbers for better performance at 8,000 miles. Stockers were still good.
All brake lines - changed to ss braided lines when one front line began to look swollen at 30,000 miles.

I need to know something more!

Extras! Sorry!

What about ABS system?

It´s very important to have one or not?

It´s that kind of extra that we don´t buy the bike if it doesn´t have it?

Thank you!

Good curves

I own from new a 2001 GS with ABS. It is low mileage (about 50,000 miles). I like the single spark boxer engine without stick coils (Replacement stick coils are expensive). I like the no linked brake system and the ABS system fitted to this year model. Essentially, this model is the forerunner of today's modern boxer oilhead powered GS but without costly ESA suspension, linked brakes, stick coils, CANbus and other costly options.

The 2000 and 2001 GS are rather basic bikes with advanced fuel injection systems and electronic engine management. The ABS is very reliable if maintained with fresh brake fluid occasionally.

The engine is tough as long as you give it nice clean oil and filter.

The transmission is smooth and reliable. Mine shifts without noise or drama.

The clutch is very tough as long as no seals leak oil onto the friction surface.

As for the rear wheel drive, this is where you'll get many comments regarding failures and poor design.

As for me, I think the final drive design is fine as long as the factory assembled it correctly. There seems to be some argument as to whether BMW has a design or manufacturing flaw in the FD. The newer design with the hole in the middle is more difficult to repair. The older unit is often repaired roadside when a failure occurs.

When initially released, the motorcycle magazines rated these bikes very high and in 2001, the R1150GS was voted best sport touring motorcycle by a US magazine.

If you find a clean 2000 or 2001, buy it. You'll not be disappointed.

As for ABS, riding on wet roads, riding in traffic and two up, I would opt for ABS. It has saved me twice from a crash.

2000 gs 1150

I just bought my second GS, 114,000 miles, had a new final drive added at 92,000 miles. If you want to keep your cost low - buy a high mileage bike that appears to run/look/sound in good shape. Believe that these engines will run for 300,000 miles plus, and you can buy what most people are scared of.

ABS is a great life saver, but if you are going to go off-road all the time, no need for ABS. As you know, these boxers are easy to work on so, go get yourself one and have some fun.

Yes, and I have a 2002 that has all those features and advantages. So look at the '02 GS and you can find them in the single spark mode with ABS without the servos.

Sorry Walrus. Yes, the 2002s are very good as well. Just stick with the oilhead models with the single spark engine.
