Six weeks?! :nono I’m lucky if the ice is off my driveway & road by May 1st. Even then there are some bikes that I don’t want to ride unless I want it, & me, to be covered in mud.
    Flatlanders! :ddog

    10 weeks from Feb 11, 4-25-08 7:45 am, Seward Hwy @ Huffman.

Friar, it was their overly optimistic “snow gone in 6 weeks” stuff that got me. It’s not impossible but not very likely. I don’t remember that happening since that one year in the early 1970s when I was riding single track trails thru the woods here in mid-March.

A close friend of mine came to visit me a week ago from Whitehorse YT

His riding time between Whitehorse and Wasilla was a little over two days

Last March he did the first solo ride to Tuktoyaktuk via the ice road.

His plans are to do this winter ride to Deadhorse and then go back to Whitehorse and do Tuk again because they are supposed to stop doing the Ice roads and I guess build a road instead.

Anyway he spent a week here changed his oil he is using
Mobil1 0W40 to assist in starting the bike in the cold.

He camps outside and is not using any electric clothing because it might breakdown.

He's adding 2 Grip Studs to the center knob of his TKC's (Google to find out about them) He's tried almost everything And he is using the Part#1200 for the front and back a little over 200 in front and back.

try those studs they screw in and out

They wont hurt your TKC and you wont have a clearance problem

Mmm not now. I don't want to destroy them. I know it may not hurt . But ...trying to keep them fresh for this summer when I do need them. And I'm not soooo much in a hurry to ride. Hoping the highways clear and dries a bit. So I can do some back and forth riding

I went ahead and bought a spare front wheel and tire like the cagers do, and stud the TKC.
Bostjan rode from Whitehorse and never threw a stud and they looked brand new.
He showed by removing a few to show me that there was just a pin prick in the rubber.

I'll let you know how it goes for me

Alaskahack, where in Europe is he from? How much tread do those studs require? My rear is almost to the treadware indicator. Would be worth trying if that is enough rubber.

Pretty impressive that he hasn't thrown any studs. Everyone else who's tried em throws a few.

TMS said he was from Slovenia. I was in the shop last Saturday visiting.

I see he has an ADV sticker. Is he an inmate on here?

Wonder if he and Sjaak will cross paths?

Drunk Uncle he is from Slovania and is in the middle of a world tour. His web site is www.aroundtheworld.si

And he still has to update it, and you have to use google to translate it

The studs that he is using are Grip Studs #1200 they have a solid carbide the length of the stud, the part that screws into the tire is a auger thread that is 3/8" dia. The length is also 3/8" this is on the #1200

Ya Mark we were in TMS friday I bought a spare wheel and TKC for the front of my bike. He's tried about everything for studs and came up with the ones that he is using. Between Whitehorse and Wasilla he didn't throw any studs

I gave him the sticker a couple of years ago because he was the first guy I met that was a adventurer

Sjaak seem to be having a little problem with the amount of weight he is trying to pull
