Is SBS going to have daily updates on the 012 Dakar rally like kast year?

And has anyone got a list of Australian riders and drivers entered to look out for?

    +1 Greg :clap

Maybe (when lauch time) if you combine this one and could create an "Aussie watch" DAKAR 2012 sticky (or similar) here in the OzForum (with a link to SafariBergs prep thread and the RACING DAKAR 2012 thread)... it would make it easier for the inmates here to keep track specifically of our Australian boys competing this year?

The "RACING" thread gets pretty thick and heavy with all the different interest around the globe from the yanks, the poms, the portugese, the italians, south africans and brazillians all chiming in... Sometimes as much as several hundred posts a DAY! For sure it's the best "overall/detailed coverage" on Dakar bikes anywhere... but if one of the "locals" from here just wants to follow the progress of the Aussie riders (or car team... Geoff Olholm is running his RRUK T1 proto again), then here in OzForum and a link to the SBS site are probably the quickest as easiest?

    cheers

Hanging out for it to start, particularly to see how our boys go over there, especially Garry and the berg team he has put together. Looking forward to see Rod and David doing well.
Some interesting changes in the auto field this year without a factory VW team, will certainly open up the top 10 to the other highly competitive teams.
Bring it on and will be following with interest.

Dean and Rach arrived in Buenos Aires yesterday. Will have a look around Palmero today and book some Tango lessons.

They have set up a Facebook page that they will be updating as often as possible.

He seems to be quite relaxed at the moment. They are having Tango Lessons while there.

Can anyone shed light on what GHR and Jake Smith are up to wrt this year's Dakar? Haven't read much about them for this year's Dakar and a look at the official competitor's list doesn't show Jake there...

Can anyone shed light on the other aussies (besides Team Husaberg) entered - CraigTarlington, Jamie Chittick and Mark Davidson?

    Thanks

    Oz riders are...

    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/us/rider/062.html
36th overall on his first attempt at the Dakar, back in 2005 on African soil, and one position better four years later in South America, David Schwarz returns to the Dakar with ambitions. Part of the Husaberg Rallye Racing Australia team, the Aussie can count on a solid structure and will make the best of his past experiences.

    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/us/rider/113.html
Third of the 2011 Australasian Safari, despite breaking a bone in his hand, Rodney Faggotter now takes on the ultimate off-road challenge, the Dakar. He'll be one of the two Aussies (with David Schwarz) in the Husaberg Rallye Racing team and for his first attempt, just hopes to finish. He however isn't too worried about the length of the event and the long days on his bike and feels he can reach a Top 30 spot overall.

    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/us/rider/121.html
His first experience on the Dakar is probably one that he'll want to forget. After enjoying the first four days, Mark Davidson was hit by altitude sickness and sadly crashed out of the race. The kind of incident that won't happen again for the 52 year old Australian who discovered the Dakar as a visitor in Paris back in 1989. For his second attempt, Davidson will have his own team with American Michael Stanfield (who started the Dakar last year on a bike at age 65) in charge. The goal now is just to finish!

    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/us/rider/124.html
Craig Tarlington's story with the Dakar is rather peculiar and could have something to do with destiny or fate. His plan was to compete in the rally back in 2009 after getting a first taste of the event when seeing scutineering in Lisbon a year before. But the 2008 race sadly never took off and moved to South America. At the time he lived in South Africa and his plans of competing were halted. Fate or destiny, made him eventually move to Chile for work. 2012 will therefore be the year for the Australian. His first goal will be to finish, before hoping to do a lot better in the years to come.

When it comes to off-road bike riding, Dean Nuttall has a very wide experience. He started in trial riding before switching to enduro and extreme enduro races as well as longer off-road rallies. It was only natural to see him register for the Dakar. The Australian doesn't want to get carried away by what many think of his capacities. He just wants to get his money's worth and reach the finish.

    http://www.dakar.com/dakar/2012/us/rider/159.html
Part of the GHR Honda team, Jamie Chittick will be one to watch on the next Dakar. After competing in several rallies back home, he's taking up the biggest challenge there is in off-road events. As prepared as can be, the Australian hopes to make it within the Top 50.

    Kiwi riders...

Three-time winner of the Roof of Africa, a South African Enduro champion and Red Bull Romaniacs 2010 champion, Chris Birch now takes on the biggest of all off-road rallies, the Dakar. Having moved from New Zealand to South Africa to really prepare for the Dakar, the rider was able to count on the tips of South African legend Alfie Cox. Birch certainly has the qualities to one day become a title contender, yet he doesn't want to get carried away and need to live the experience. His first mission: to finish the Dakar.

PS Love the new security initiative with riders photos not being shown for the first time. Great to think the authorities are looking out for these guys..:evil

If Jamie and Mark had gone with GHR for this dakar then I think you'll find that hoffo would be over there with one or two of the smith boys for another crack. Look out for a Dakar effort from hoffo in 2013

Jamie Chittick is riding with Team Europe Honda not GHR, he had payed his deposit to go with ghr and in july they pulled out, in a last minute scurry we managed to organise a spot on the europe honda team. I have been getting updates from his brother and a couple pictures of the setup so far. When the race starts ill update this thread with how he is going.

Heres a update from a couple days ago

We left bueons aires 2 days ago
Jamie John and dad went by bus direct to Mar del plata about 6 hrs away down the coast to were the start line will be on news years eve
they arrived at around 6pm local time
we met the team at the airport and all are great
They have given us a full set of clothing 8 shirts ,jumpers shorts ect and include us in everything they do you could not have asked for more.
All the riders are here now although cody quinn one of the riders still hasn't got is bike it is still on a plane as he got it airfreighted him self
after the guys left to go to mar del plata Claire and me had to go with the other half of the team to collect our car

we left by bus with 12 other guys from the team and travelled 2.5 hrs north to the port were the cars and trucks ect all came of the boat
When we arrived we waited around for a while for the paperwork and then i had to leave claire and go into the port to get the car
once there I got the paperwork sorted and found the car on the whalf with the other 2000 of them.
    There were vechiles every were
them the cars were lined up and scanned through customs
then with a bit more paperwork we were able to leave

I picked up claire and waited for the rest of the team
we had 4 land cruisers and 4 trucks
we then left the port and headed for mar del plata to join the rest
we left the port at 5pm at night in the end and after a very long drive arrived at mar del plata at 5am in the morning
we got about 3hrs sleep at the hotel and then went back down to the start line to look at the bikes getting unloaded out of the truck

Dad and john spent all day at the start line and jamie drove the car around to get used to being on the other side of the road
last night claire and I had an early night as we were very tired and the guys went out for dinner
    some where
Today we are going to organize the car and help with whatever to get ready to go
the bike still have to pass through documentation tomorrow at 7 pm then we will be ready to go
will send some pictures hope you get them ok
there is a lot of people here every were you go they are lining up to take pictures ,even when you are at a cafe eating they are taking pictures of the car out side (crazy stuff)
