I was born in Romania and moved to Canada in 2004. After exploring as much as I could on my mountain bike, in 2008 I came to the conclusion that I cannot go far enough:huh so that's when I bought my first motorbike(klr). I bought my KTM 990 adv in 2010 and that's when I really started riding. After finishing a long trip from Vancouver BC to Ushuaia Tierra del fuego and back and also lots and lots of rides in between (most of them off road) my bike needed a complete overhaul.(especially after the OSO LOCO TACO TOUR) After Oso LOCO it was time for a new bike not because my 07 bike wasn't running anymore but mostly because in my opinion the LC8 adventures it's by far a "MASTER PIECE" no other bike comes close to this one so why not have two especially now that they'll stop making them this is my new love 2013 990 adv BAJA edition (yes it's new) Ok let's get on with "THE PROJECT" One of the big issues that I'll have to fix soon This happened on the Rubicon trail this summer and It's not because of the side stand re-locator but because of hitting a big rock with a very soft touratech skid plate. Like our inmate bigwan would say "friends don't let friends buy touratech" JB weld fix and I was able to finish the Rubicon and ride the bike back to Canada Well today was day one working on the bike:first getting the parts that need painting of the bike and prepped. First panel gets some work done I used paint stripper to take all paint off. It's a must on the KTM as someone in the painting process forgot about the primer on all the 990's that I know paint stripper at work making room for some proper Dakar looks Some face lifting required
I used some 40 grid sand paper to make the back of the panel really rough so the fiberglass resin would bond well. This is a day worth of work. I'll continue tomorrow and hope to put some primer on. As you can see from the last picture the bike has different lights. That is a project that me and and a friend, Ian from Britannia composites, work on now. I think it's coming along really well. At this point we need to test some lights options for the high beam. I like the idea of LED for high beam but it'll come down to the winner of the test we wanna do next week once we have all the lights that we think are worth trying.
Hi Lica, cool winter projects! (no pun intended) Should give Ian a qwik plug since he does pretty nice work. http://britanniacomposites.com/ MZ
Subscribed. From what I've seen of the Brittaniacomposites Mirage line for BMWs, I'm looking forward to seeing the final product for the 950/990 ADVs. The working model appears to be more swept-back than stock, coupled with an adjustable screen looks like something I'd be very happy with.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-KTM-F...ake:KTM|Model:990&hash=item3cd01ee25f&vxp=mtr this ones ...they are good I have 100 000 km on them now and they still work well
Nice choice to buy a Baja as second one. Nice combination of colours. I would love to buy a second one for me as well...but my one must be carb 950! Maybe a SE. Ciao Nic
Some progress has been made in the past two days and not only on my bike. I piked up my project bike from Ian and left the Baja with him so he can work on the fearing. My friend Razvan needed some help to paint his car so we both worked together to get the car and bike ready for paint. Boy my bike needs a lot of work to mask all the years of "OSO LOVE" Razvan After lots and lots of sanding, prepping, laughing and some "visinata"(romanian brandy) we were ready to spray some primer. whoever invented this mixing cups was a smart man decorating the Christmas tree Rolled the bike in to guard the work we did and hit the bed Looks like the spring from the new bike it's the only clean thing on the bike now... boy it's gonna b a looooong winter
You have me worried about my skid plate now. I have the same touratech. Was on the bike when I got it. I might just watch for big rocks ! Your chain on the one your doing up looks Very loose !! Nice work, what colour scheme you going with?
your skid plate should be fine if you ride the bike like a normal person would...only if you ride stupid like some of us do I would recommend replacing that ASAP The chain is loose because I had a 45 and a 47 sprocket on the bike when I did Rubicon and I don't want to cut it because its new and will go on my baja next. It has 120 links so if I cut one link like you're suppose to for a 42 sprocket I cannot use the 45 and 47 on the same chain.....makes sense :huh
It was a busy week for me therefore I didn't put a lot of work on the bike. This weekend I felt really tired and I needed something else i needed a bust so nothing better than going on a ride. Boy it was amazing, it's the perfect medicine for me. Lots and lots of sanding and body work happened this week tho and I'm pleased with the result I think the bike lost a lot of character (scratches) My friend Matt had some extra 990 adv S stickers left from when I painted his bike. I want to use those because I really like the Tuareg logo of Dakar but the background will be orange and the sticker is orange too So I have a pretty cool Idea how to put the orange on orange and still be visible. At this point I think the color schema will be a combination of REPSOL/REDBULL and the 990 adv s stickers. In the meantime Ian worked a bit more on the light project. It's coming together but now we have to wait for some lights to arrive before he can finish it up. I would like to see LED's for the high beam but will see after we test some. Me and my friend Mark were up there playing in the snow when a guy on a new V-strom showed up....my face dropped His name is Simon and he stared riding in march 2013 when he bought his V-strom.Since than he put 27.000 km on it.... We talked a bit than we invited him to ride with us and he accepted :eek1. Man this guy knew how to shift gears I was shocked. At the next stop I asked him if he dirt biked before and he sad no :eek1 than he mentioned "I used to downhill mountain bike RACE" ...now that explains it Another one of us who transfers mountain bike skills to dual sport. Mark practicing the fine art of clutch control Gotta love our "California" weather Didn't stop us we had a hoot Ok that's it for now next post will be more work less play so I don't turn this winter project into something else.
