krauser bags - safety strap

I recently bought/installed the old style Krauser bags on my r90/6.

With the infamous seat belt latch.

I plan on adding a safety straps.

Have seen images of a strap running vertically keeping the bags on the racks and the bags closed.

Any suggestions or images showing how people have attached the straps to the racks?

Most people just wrap the strap around the whole unit, bag and mount. Some use a cinch type strap and other use a velcro type. A few just use rope.

I use parachute cord and tie a truckers' hitch just to piss the purists off.

Don't attach the straps to the rack. if you need it for something more desperate it's nice to get it off.

I rigged straps to my brothers rooftop aero-crap-carrier. it blew open on him once on the highway. because it's high up and opens even higher, we rivited strap retainers to the plastic so when he opened it he wouldn't lose the far end of the strap.

I can do a pic if you need one. It's a small metal bar on short legs with holes for bolts in the legs. hat shaped in profile. About an inch and a half long with 1/4" underneath it.

I've made up four webbing straps, with a 'D' loop at each end. Two have cinch buckles at the other end, two don't. Loop one of each pair on the top & bottom rails (long end on the inner side of each rail), clip in the bags, run the top strap under the handle, & then cinch up that to the bottom strap. The D-ring on the straps with the buckle has to be large enough to pass the buckle through. The entire set up has the advantage of tightening the bags on the rails too.

Wrap them around the frame and bag, they are long enough to do a double wrap around the bag frame.

The buckles are those plastic push & click type. The straps are sturdy. I suspect I had too much tension on the buckle, forcing the opposing sides together against too much tension. Dodged a bullet, just last weekend.

Saw a bloke last year that's still using his set from the '70's.

Same buckle I have one my straps David. See my pix above. I think I had them on too tight, encouraging one to come apart.

It took me ages to get them just right; luckily once set, they don't need further adjustment.

I have been using ratchet tie down straps which double as something to throw my tarp over or securing the bike on a trailer if something happens.

That's a lot more complicated than the hitch I use when tieing down a load..

I can't remember what crate I got my straps out of. Their secret is that they are cotton and won't melt on hot exhaust.

Good Lord, I am good at knots but that is one of the most complex ones I've seen and I really can't see any advantage to it other than amazing bystanders. The one I use can be tied and untied while drunk - the true measure of usefulness in a knot.

Same connections as the ones that failed on mine. Just have them snug, not too tightly connected. Mine ended up wrapped around the final drive.
