I noticed there are not many RR from Romania – Transylvania and since I saw you liked my RR riding to Rome through Europe, like Piccolino I got some courage and I will try to show you some places in our country both on and off road, maybe this will help you to choose your next destination through or to this country.Unfortunatelly I don’t have a GPS but if you need informations I will try to help you someway...

.....so I will start with a 3 day report in the Carpathian mountains ...more exactly in Calimani, Hasmas and Gurghiului mountains.

I live in Targu Mures (Transylvania) somewhere in the center of Romania surrounded by the Carpathians and this ride starts from here ,the ride starts with a conversation on a local forum and the next day I’m on my way on a heavy rain to Reghin,at 6.30 PM we meet at a gas station in Reghin a smaller city near Targu Mures.

This is the route we followed:

Ok, everybody is here, we’re ready to go ,we make a pits top in Toplita to buy some wine and here we leave the main road and start riding on a forest road, meanwhile I observed that I lost my tent, fortunately the guys had a place for me too. We camped along a stream and made a big fire fried some sausages and of course we didn’t forget about the wine.

    The camping place:

    ...and the fire:

Day 2 we woke up at 7 am because some guys in a huge truck, they saw our bikes and started to scream

    Coold morning:

We packed up and continued our ride to Retitis Peak (2021 m ) in Calimani Natural Reservation.

    We got some fresh water:

    Our way to the top:

We came along that road in the backround:

As we reached the top it was a breathtaking view, on one side was a huge sulfur extraction area otherwise a natural disaster , on the other side some clouds tickling the mountain.

The extraction point and the desolate city:

Here we ate our breakfast and started to go round the extractive area near Negoiu Unguresc mountain, and Pietrosu peak(Pietrosu of the Calimani mountains, I accentuate this because there is another Pietrosu wich is not situated in the Caliman mountains )

    Negoiu Unguresc(Hungarian Negoj):

When we reached the gate on the otherside of the reservation, there were 2 guardians, but they had nothing to comment maybe because we were 4 ,anyway our road went through Gura Haitii, Bilbor we reached Toplita where we got a good and cheap lunch in a restaurant. Meanwhile started to rain and accompanied us trough Capu Corbului,Tulghes, Hagota and Ditrau.

    Go on, go on...

I was at Romania last year did 67C (without urdele pass :cry ), but I am still hungry of more such roads. Next year I'm going to pass whole Karpats starting from Ukraina through Romania ending at Albania. That what currently making some problebs is lack of detailed maps of Romania's Karpats. Dear Hosszu Toll are able to give some clues where I can buy such maps?

This year I buyed a an atlas of Romania from Cartographia editor(I think they are from Hungary),from a Rompetrol or OMV gas station,I don't remember,it's romanian name is ROMANIA ATLAS RUTIER or in english ROAD ATLAS OF ROMANIA or if you want to have one before arriving in romania I found a site, this will help you to buy from another country than Romania and Hungary,I just saw there Poland too:

    http://www.cartographiaonline.com/export/wheretobuy.vm?SSZ_id=158

I can tell you this is an A4,160 pages atlas including forrest roads too, tourist ttractions, legend in 8 languages, administrative map, distance chart and index with postal codes, you will need a more detailed map only if you want to reach some very wild places, anyway if you have this map you can't get lost in here,I use this atlas both on and off road.

This is how it looks like: http://www.libertaspublishing.ro/files2/files/97_2.jpg

I will continue with a one day trip alone in Bargaului mountains.

I woke up on a Saturday morning I saw the sun was shining so I sad to myself: it's a good day for riding,I got the map and I'm on my way to lake Colibita and its surroundings(never been there before).

The route: Targu Mures - Reghin - Bistrita - Prundu Bargaului - and there I left behind the main road and ride up to Colibita lake.Arrived at the lake, I took some pictures, it was very hot and decided to go for a ride on a forrest road around the lake.
I was riding about 10 min and started to rain but stopped very quick,I sad if it stoped I will continue...I was riding a couple of hours when.... silence and then.. thunder,a big hailstorm catched me in the middle of a big forrest,I sad I can not get out alone. In the forest it was so dark that I went with my halogen beam....and for that earlier I saw some remains of an animal(probably the bear was playing around),slowly I started the heavy work because the rain the road was impracticable only deep mud and I was alone with a 200 kg motorbike.I don't know how many times I felt, this wouldn't be a problem if I don't got stock in the mud so I went in the forest and got some branches,I had to dig with by hand put the branches under the wheel and that way I could got out,I did this a few times finaly I tied the branches on the bike so Ino longer had to serch in the woods.

Lesson: I will never go alone on such a road.

    The road to the lake:

    Hosszu Toll,

Many thanks for posting. I still have fond memories of riding from England to Romania and spending time around Cluj Napoca, Sibui and Bistrita. The forests are truly magical. Keep 'em coming.

    Cheers,
