I am a new owner of a project '88 GS and keep seeing these pics of the high mount front fender with a additional fender extender on the end of the fender. The fender itself I got. After a search on Max's BMW I cannot find this 'tip'. Is it OEM? What are the pros and cons of the extender? Would I need some kind of brace? Thanks.

Watch on ebay and the IBMR marketplace. You'll probably have to buy the entire fender for the tip. No bracing that I recall but you can order the specific fastener kit from BMW. :beer :beer

Yes that's the extension for the PD. It depends what you're trying to accomplish with your project bike whether or not it's worth it. Acerbis makes a number of good front fenders.

If you've got an 88, I'll assume black or white. Most Acerbis styles are available in white. I found their Baja front fender in black. They'll tell you it isn't in the catalog but when they called the distributor, it was indeed available.

    The fender extension in primer is 46 61 2 303 925
    $24.73 from Chicago BMW

    In white 46 61 2 315 160
    $106.40 from Chicago BMW

    In black 46 61 2 322 718
    "not found" at Chicago BMW

    The protective cap for the M5X20 screw is 51 81 1 813 017
    "not found" at Chicago BMW

I wouldn't be certain that the later model PD fender is same as the original fender on an '88. The extension is for the later model PD fender.

I actually bedlinered mine and it looks great, plus no scratching.

Used a rattle can of bedliner, scotchbrited the piece before spraying 1st coat. Put on 3 coats and it works and looks great.'

Besides being cheaper and looking better, the Acerbis is gonna work better than the BMW fender.

SJBMW still has them in stock for both earlier & later R100's not sure about
the R80's. Mine came with slight casting defects, off center holes, I'm so
AR that I returned mine, somethings just need to look right.

Yeah, I just bought a new one from SJBMW and the casting and machining isn't too flash. Straight though and the holes were lined up. I need to buy some slightly longer bolts.

Thanks guys for the advice on the San Jose fork brace, the identity of which I discovered when I bothered to do a Google search. I see the part number for my 1989 GS-PD is #46510 @ $79.95.

I wonder if there is a similar fork brace available in the UK?
