I have a mysterious noise in the dash of my 2011 Corolla (90,000 miles) that I just started noticing. I only seem to notice it at speeds above 60 mph and it sounds like it's coming from the very center of the dash, maybe behind the instrument cluster or maybe over to the right of it a bit. The sound kinda reminds me of the sound one of my old Chevy vehicles from long ago made when the speedometer cable was going bad.
Any suggestions on what to look for or how to go about replacing the cable itself?

I've never had much luck with Hayne's or Chilton's manuals and the factory service manual is $300.

I would doubt that your car has a cable.

Oh, shucks - you're probably right. I guess I may as well drop it off at the Toyota dealer then and see if they can tell me what it is. I'm tired of working on crap on cars these days anyway.

Could it be your Heater/AC blower fan?
Many are on very low speed even when off.

Change the speeds and see if it changes the noise.

Yes, it does - that's why I was thinking speedo cable.
I'll research the fan and see what I can find out. Hell, it may have some leaves or one of my kid's toys or school papers sucked up in there; though, that's not likely because it has some sort of "cabin filter".

My Camry has a cabin filter, but one time on recirc (the damper for which is upstream of the filter) it sucked a loose piece of paper out of the glove box and into the damper, blocking airflow. I had to lower the glove box to reach in there to get the paper out.

The noise changes with blower fan speed, or vehicle speed?

Nope, the fan speed doesn't affect it at all.

Then the speedometer head may need work. Not sure what would be involved, but I assume there's some kind of motor drive in there for the needle.

Dash and windshield interface causing noise. Take a piece of paper and fold it till it is a little thicker than the thickness of the space between. Jam it in there. See if it quiets it down.

It doesn't appear to be any windshield interface noise. No matter what I cram in there, the sound and frequency remains the same. The sound also doesn't change when I hit bumps or drive on different surfaces.

What about if you shift to neutral and let the engine drop back to idle?

A big SUV cut closely in front of me on my way home from work today and the noise immediately stopped. As it pulled away from me, the noise slowly returned. Afterwards I drafted in behind an 18-wheeler and it went way again.
The only thing I can think of that's different on the car is that I put some new wiper blades on it a few weeks ago. And they're OEM blades ffrom the Toyota dealership too!

I'll investigate further and let y'all know what I find.

Put a few pieces of duct tape over the plastic cowling at the bottom of windshield. It could be rattling.

You can try completely removing the wiper blades and wrapping the post ends with electrical tape (to prevent scratching the windshield); then go for a high-speed test run.

I did turn on the wipers this morning and it made no difference whatsoever in the sound, so I've got to investigate further.

When I got to work, I did pick a few pieces of pinestraw out of the vent area just below the wipers, so I'll see if that changes anything on my ride home. It was too dark for me to see if there was anything like a visibly loose part or anything, so I'll check for that also when I get home today.
