Did the search and read them closely. Unfortunately, haven't been able to make a decision based on the information provided. Astetically, I don't care for the RCU shelf. I would like to have the V1 behind the windscreen and up and in my sight line (I use a walkman with helmet speakers). Concerned that the Saeng fork and crossbar mounts aren't tall enought to clear the dash instruments, not sure the Stem mount can be secured to my handlebar without obscuring the speedo or tach and not sure the RAM with the ball on the reservoir is the way to go or not. Would like to see what setups are out there for behind the windscreen. Pics please... TIA, Mike M
This worked for me:http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19064&highlight=radar+detector+mount I have about 4 Kmiles on this and it has worked very well, even off road! Cheers, Jorge
Mike...it's hard to beat the versatility of the RAM mount for an off the shelf system. The versatility is important to me, because the first installation of anything on the bike usually gets reworked a time or two before I am satisfied . The Saeng mounts are beautiful crafted, and come with a beautifully crafted price too, but they seem more site specific than the RAM. Rubber Cow...Nice work on the radar mount...How is the carbon rod brace attached at the point where it rests above the speedo ?
I can't recommend the RAM units enough. Myself and my wife went thru this for quite awhile trying to find aay to mount an iPod, XMA3 amp and on occasion FRS radios on our GSs. If theft and access to PTT buttons, etc wasn't an issue, a shelf would be fine, but... The RAM units are SOLID. I had my doubts, but once tightened it's like they were molded in that shape. If you go that route, I would recommend strongly that you buy an over-supply of various mounts, balls and arms. They all interchange and you'll invariably find a better place to mount something once you have the units in front of you - just to discover the base you'd like is the one you didn't order... Also, the parts are so small and inexpensive thatthe cost of shipping one or two bases gets silly vs shipping what you need and some variety at once.
If you aare worried about the sturdiness and tightness of the ball mount - don't be.. I have over 50K miles on one with a V1 and it continues to be as tight as a .......
Hey Sherpa, At the lower end of the carbon rod is a rubber sleeve with flared foot. This sleeve is from a kite shop and is used for joining kite spars at odd angles. That foot just sits against the speedo top and dash face because it is under load from the weight of the unit and mount. Cheers, Jorge
The Stem handle bar mount worked great for me. One of the best made accessories I have bought. I had mine setup so it was sitting right above the clutch resevoir. Looked nice, and was out of way, but still pointing in right direction. I have since mounted my 8500 in an Otter waterproof case attached to the lower left bar of my Aeroflow screen where some mount lights. It is not noticeable to others, waterproof so I use it even in the rain. Combined with the Radar Screamer alert, it is a great solution. But if you are mounting more tradionally, the Stem mount is great.
I have been considering the replacement brake reservior cap that has a RAM-compatible mounting ball. This gets the V1 out to the side a little, so it can see backwards better.
Interesting----I was leaning towards Saeng but based on the information, I think I will go with the RAM with multiple bases for it's variations. Thanks to the asylum. Mike M
This sounds interesting. I have my 8500 in my tankbag which has some drawbacks. If you can...I'd really like to see some photos of your Otter case/8500 installation... Thanks. Rubber Cow...thanks for the explanation.
It is fairly secure, as you have to either take the Aeroflow wing off, or loosen the bolt and lower the Otterbox to be able to open it. I have a wire tie around the latch mechanism for security as well.
Photo of Otter unit. I used an Ancor Liquid Tight Wire Seal #174117 purchased from West Marine to seal the wires. Drilled a hole in Otter, installed the Ancor and used some silicone to be sure. It comes w/ severel grommets, including a solid one. I drilled the center of it, and then sliced in from one side to the drilled hole. I slipped this over the cables, and inserted in the wire seal and tightened the nut, which compresses the grommet giving a good seal.
Thanks for the pictures temoore...it's not as noticeable as it sounded...nicely done. I just have to decide if getting it out of the tankbag and placing it where it will be more effective is worth the added risk of an LEO spotting it. Hey...you got an item number on that Otter Box.
It is the 8000. It is a good size, other than being a little taller than need be, it is the correct width and depth. As a note, my setup still seems to pick up rear radar fine. We have several locations w/ fixed radar signs to warn you of your speed, and is a good opportunity to check out how it works.
temoore: Great idea on the Passport in the Otter box and an awesome execution. I am concerned in your setup that the efficiency of the detector may be reduced due to its location and being enveloped in the plastic. Not only the normal radar bands, but also the laser (LIDAR) signals. Would you like to comment on your experiences please? Thank you,
here is the saeng mirror mount It is a great part Saeng personel is very helpfull in helping you pick which mount to use and has good info on various bikes the even exchanged on for me when I ordered the wrong one good stuff great people
temoore, I really like your solution, but I have lights mounted on my AeroFlow bracket. Do you think the otter box would fit along side and up between the windscreen and the bike? Is that a good place to mt the radar? TIA
