I am planning a trip up to Cody Wyo and want to carry some spare oil to top up 2001 GS. I don't want to carry a partial Qt bottle of oil in my panniers. Is there holder that goes on the outside of panniers to hold an oil can?????????? Thanks
Option 1, http://www.agrisupply.com/operator-manual-canister/p/67670/ Mount it vertical. Cap comes off, put aluminum drink bottle from Menards, Walgreen's, etc inside with oil within. Works for me. You can scrunch up a spare tire inner tube and cramb it into the inside of the cap, or eat your soup out of it. Yes, those are all KLR tricks. But we would carry USED oil Sorry.
I always just take a partial bottle. Just make sure it is upright. I'm not sure why I bother though. I didn'T add any on my trip to hondurace last year and didn't add enough between changes on my 10K mile trip last month to make it worth it. My bike is an 01 with 74K on it. Lots of 90 mph days and high heat and no oil use.
I use a 500ml Nalgene bottle from REI or other sporting goods store. Made for lab chemicals original now used in mountain sports. The bottles are virtually leak proof. With my KLR and no my GS and have never had issue in panniers.
Carry it in a 1 gallon plastic storage bag which folks use to store stuff in the fridge. Problem solved. Never leaked in close to 300k miles on my GS's. Throw in the tool for opening the oil fill cover and your all set.
I like to use fuel bottles because they don't leak. The bracket to mount them on the painnier comes from Touratech.
I don't know what route you're taking to Cody, but if you are absolutely against zip-locking a partial quart in your bag, there are always O'Reilly Auto Parts stores all along the major routes, they carry motorcycle oil.
Do you think you'll need extra oil for such a short trip? It's only 570 miles one way. If your 2001 boxer is using oil you might want to consider changing brands or grades to reduce (eliminate) oil use. My 2001 uses no measurable oil between changes (annually) regardless of miles (usually less than 10,000 miles). Yours should be about the same. I would top off to the middle of the sight glass and not worry if it gets low on the sight glass. Remember, there are four quarts of oil in the engine. You can ride safely with 3.
You guys are seriuously contemplating pouring oil out of the bottle it came in and into another bottle for transport? People! Stop it!
carrying it is the easy part. deciding which oil to take is the real issue here. I prefer Royal purple.
I carried oil a long time ago. Then I discovered you could buy it nearly anywhere. The bike can safely run a quart low, so it is highly unlikely that you will "suddenly" fid yourself in the middle of nowhere in need of half a quart of oil. Jim
If I have to add oil hopefully its not a full quart so buying it on the road isn't a good option for me. I carry a partial bottle in the upright position in one of those nifty zippered pouches that the dealer sells. I've had to add oil on the road but it's only been several hundred cc's to bring the level from near the bottom to nearer the top of the window. Necessary or not, that's how I do it. Anyway, never had a problem with the oil container leaking in the pouch.
actually, I wouldnt bother, even on a several thousand mile trip, you shouldnt need to add much, and if you did, buy a bottle pour in what you need, give the rest to someone else. that assumes the bike isnt using oil excessively, and they should not.
I like to carry some spare Royal Purple as I ride along. I store it in my tires. It does just as good a job balancing them as dyna beads.
I ordered 3 dyna beads, but they sent me 4, i was furious. so mad I rode right to the factory, but my hippo hands ruined my front rotor, so I cut the trip short.
