I just ordered a face shield and pinlock for my Shoei helmet. General consensus seems to be that they work very well for cold weather riding. I was wondering if they are a disadvantage in any way in warmer weather. I will be taking a long trip this winter, starting in the very cold, and going to very warm . Will I need to bring along my regular shield? I do typically wear sunglasses and in warm weather, like to leave the shield up, but in case of bugs or rain it would be down. thanks.
No problems with pinlock inserts. I rode in 30 degree weather one day and 85 degrees the next heading south into Nevada...no problems what so ever and I wear sunglasses most of the time during daylight. I use the light tint shield. No fogging in rain or cold.
One problem that can happen......the pin lock can move around slightly with use and cause tiny scratches on the both the shield and the pin lock insert.
The pinlock works great in any temp from a few below freezing to the few about 100 that I have ridden with mine in.
Easy enough to pop the pinlock in an out... just remove your visor from the helmet, flatten it out on a T-shirt and out it comes - reverse to get back on. You don't even have to touch the cam pins.
seems like I fog when it gets close to 50 F and raining in WI. My xd with pin lock now fogs up after two years, so I figure I need a new one. I would say, if you want prolonged its life, is to use a shield with pin lock and insert in the spring and fall , then swap out when it gets warmer., I just left mine on and think I scratched it up, it got really blurry at night. Hey, I think I just talked myself into a christmas gift for my self,, but then, my xd2 is getting old,, maybe a new helmet,, yeah thats it,, AND a new shield and pinlock My $.02
I just got the new shield and pinlock insert yesterday. I put it together and tried it immediately, and it is very easy to put together. It was warm last night when I went for a ride, about 50 f. I closed the shield and breathed on the shield on purpose and I could see fogging around the edge, but not on the insert at all . This is going to be great! I think I will swap back and forth between plain shield and pinlock shield, and leave the pinlock insert installed for the most part to minimize scratching and wear cause these things aint cheap! I may just take the new one on my trip this winter and come up with a place to stow the insert somewhere it wont get scratched or damaged. The instructions say the insert is more easily scratched than the shield and to keep the shield down when riding [ which I rarely do in warm weather], the warning also states that wind could seperate the insert from the shield if you ride with it up. Anyone have problems with that? I want to maximize the life of this thing due to the cost [although I guess I would likely only have to replace the insert so that wouldn't be too bad]
To maximize the Pinlocks life, touch it as little as possible, never wipe it dry, clean only by removing the insert and washing with soap and water and pat drying with a soft cloth. To make sure you never strip the plastic pin/cams, flatten your visor to spread the pins apart to release the insert and reverse to install.
