Final Drive rebuild $$$

Well,My FD Finally gave up the ghost,,was kinda wondering what a dealer would charge to rebuild it for me?I know its probally gonna cost me a small fortune,but i'm not that good with stuff like this.Thanks

I think you'd have to ask a dealer that. They might have the added advantage of knowing what kind of bike you have.

I had mine done recently. Failed big bearing, so it was replaced, along with the tapered bearing, a couple of shims and the seal.

Price from a BMW specialist was AU$400. Our dollar is on par with the US at the moment, but we still pay bigger money for the parts. The big bearing was around $180! There isn't much labour in the job, hence the low price. He had the gear to do the shimming (preload) correctly, so I was happy to pay since the labour cost was a small percentage of the total.

My second-hand unit (still working!) came from a 100,000 kilometre RT. Unknown history, so a bit of a punt. It cost me $250. Either way, I now have a spare.

If the failure has chewed up the gears, then it's a whole different story. That's where the big money is, and where you look for a second-hand unit.

Aren't the 1150s a lot cheaper and way easier to rebuild than the 1200s?

A new FD back when my bike was new was 850 USD. Rebuilding it depends on what has gone wrong. The cost for bearings and seals isn't that much-- the cost for the labour is what hurts. You want someone who knows these drives well and has a reputation for excellent work and someone who is tune with the shimming process. My FD lasted 65,000 hard miles, I want another 65,000 miles from the rebuild. It pays to have an expert do it.

For what it's worth, the chain and sprockets on my F650 were about 230 USD and I have to do them every 18,000 or so. If I pay for labour that's about 320 dollars-- nearly what it costs to rebuild a final drive.

But a 1200 FD and an 1150 FD are two different designs.

From what I read, rebuilding a 1200 FD is much more involved (tooling wise) than a 1150 FD.

I rebuilt/reshimmed mine 4 months into my BMW GS ownership without any problems. I've gone over 15K miles on it (most of which we're 2-up fully loaded touring). I think parts cost me around 200$ even.

400$ for a rebuild is a good price if you can be without the use of your moto for that long.
