Home. Rain, drizzle, wind, 5 seconds of sun then more of the other three. Abused by bluehairs going 15 under on the way to church.

It was good to see everyone and to start some more new friendships.

blooch, thanks again for being a river to your people.

Made it home. I checked my oil and straps after I cleared Skyline (all were fine) only to find my starter / battery was getting weaker and only just barely started the bike. I had enough gas, so decided to push for home only to hit the hardest rain of the journey. And I can't stop to put on rain gear...

There also were a seemingly large number of people on VA-20 headed west, plus some trailer I was behind that was going 50 and spraying water everywhere.

Lessons learned:

-Frogg Toggs are a hell of a lot more waterproof than the inside rain lining of (at least my) jacket. To be fair the rain linig did work, but anything the outer, wet mesh touched became drenched, such as the belt line,

-Standard riding pants don't keep water out very well

-Camping hammocks work if you take the time to work how to arrange it so you don't sag into the center. You also must work out proper knots (taut-line hitches are very handy). Make sure you have about 15' webbing loop to go around big trees. Hennessy's included straps are too $%^$% short.

-Tarps are a good thing, but only if they are covering that which you want to not get rain on it. Nylon tarps give more acreage per pound

-Nothing dries when the humidity is 100%

-Tom knows Gore-Tex

-I love my external frame backpack for the ease with which the frame can be strapped to a bike and that other things can be strapped to it or the bike.

-Inmates are awesome! Thanks to everyone (esp. Blooch!)

Now I need to look up some of those big webbing straps and a pair of Sidi boots...

Home safe - no turnbacks, no hotels! Lots of rain all the way to Frederick, then less. Final 40 miles on dry pavement - had to stop to take off the thick gloves and put on the sunglasses!

Yeah, you never made it down to the fire and by the time I got back up to Mason jar central you had already left. I wish we had more time to talk about V-Stroms, turkeys, whitetails, and all the other stuff that makes us happy. I'll give you a call next week.

Before you sink more money in more Henessey straps, get a set of Kammok Python straps ($19.95 a set) and two their Kanga Claw is a 22kN wire gate carabiners ($10 ea). The straps have multiple attachment points, are 10 feet long and don't stretch - at all. Their shipping is only $5 flat rate. www.kammock.com

I wish I could think of something clever and cool to say about how great the weekend was and how cool everybody is and what a great guy Blooch is and what a great place he has and how much fun the ride on Saturday was and how everything was great in spite of the rain and how good the food was and how much I'm looking forward to the next time I get to see you all again and how it rained the whole way home but I stayed dry and stuff like that but I just can't put it into words so I'll just use this little emoticon thingy.
