I understand that Garmin's maps for this area lack detail and that there may be better options. Two that have come up are www.smellybiker.com and www.proyectomapear.com.ar.

Trip will cover from Ushuaia to Osorno and a good bit off road.

    Any insights greatly appreciated!

I haven't seen openstreetmap, but proyectomapear is GREAT. Every gas station, bank, city street (with names), routable, etc. As good as it gets.

Free Proyectomapear is far better than the piece of trash Garmin's Chile rep will try to sell you for big bucks.

My GPS broke somewhere in Bolivia and ive been traveling with a map only, and really enjoying it.

When you get to Chile, go to the Copec gas station and buy their ruta map, its amazing. Itll give you tons of great dirt roads that may or may not be on your GPS.

i just made the trip from osorno to perito moreno using mapear maps.
those are great, tho only thing not perfect were somo circulation orientation on somo chileans towns, and some partas that were shown as paved and were dirt, or the other wayn around, but i had taken waypoint of that so next version has that solved.

You'll like Proyectomapear. Very good and free. Used them for Chile and Argentina to the bottom. Have a good ride (watch that wind).:D
