Being a fan of KNYBanjo's daytrip picture thread, I thought I'd give it a try...

When I first started in DS bikes a few years back, I took the name BackwoodsKLR, cause my goal was to explore the backwoods, backroads, and out of the way places of Mississippi...

    So here we go!

Met up this morning with the local KTM mafia. :lol3 Luckily they let someone who has not tasted the orange Koolaid ride along with them! :freakyThe Heart & Soul Cafe is out new hangout for breakfast!

We had to slab a bit to get out to the good stuff
    [IMG]

This is a War Between the States battlefield that the locals have been fixing up. Has a row of canons across the line...

We rode up on a guy taking his old military Jeep for a spin. Looked like a sweet ride!

Anyone know what they sell here? :eek1
    [IMG]

We may not have mountains in MS, but we do have a few waterfalls...

I have ridden past this old mill / plant / something and still don't know what it used to be. The road is called "Oil Mill Road".

    More to come...

    And on we rode...

    Courthouse
    [IMG]

The Exxon right next to the Jewish Synagogue?

The town is known for the steeple with a Gold Finger pointing skyward... It's not the ADV salute, but... :D
    [IMG]

The window of the Exxon is decorated with snapshots...

    Smalltown, MS.

This looked like the kind of place that checks you for guns at the door and gives you a knife so you have a chance... :evil

Soon we arrived at the Shaifer House...

I can only imagine what it was like in the 1860's when the Union army came marching up this road...

The sentry saw them coming and the first shot of the battle of Port Gibson was fired from right here, supposedly...

Soon we arrive at the Old Country Store for lunch. If you are ever in the area, check it out!

Fried chicken buffet, and Mr. D comes out and sings to the patrons.

Soon we arrived at what is known as the "Ghosttowne" of Rodney. (Not really a ghosttown, but I'd say the population is in single digits, except during Deer Season!

We are checking out the historic Rodney Presbyterian Church (note the canonball in the front wall)...

While we are standing around, we see a bike coming...

    They were out exploring, too
    [IMG]

The levee you see here was built during the flooding of the MS river last Spring. Many structures were saved from the flooding by a levee added around them.

I guess this was the Rodney General Store with a nice gas pump still out front.

We took some more back roads and soon passed through the campus of Alcorn State University.

And stopped by the Ruins of Windsor...

At one time, it looked like this:

Good ride, guys. I'll have to go see if any of my video came out! :clap

    Thanks for sharing!

I did a little searching on the abandoned mill in Port Gibson. I've always been curious too. It's the Port Gibson Oil Mill, which made cottonseed oil. Lots of info here, and here.

Me, BW, Supah, and powerslider met up this morning for a little ride. Powerslider just moved here from Oregon. He sent me a message this week, about riding, so we thought we'd show him a little of the Port Gibson area. He is riding a very nice 2005.5 KTM 950.

We slabbed it to Utica then started riding some good stuff.

First we needed an old man break.

We made our way past Hunt rd falls, Grand Gulf, Port Gibson, and on to the Shaifer House.

After lunch at the Old Country Store, we headed southeast to check out the low water crossing. Its pretty low.

    Back up towards Rodney.

We ran into fellow inmate Dewalt and passenger in Rodney. Dewalt is from Southwest MS. After years of riding, this was our first time meeting.

We left Rodney and made our way to Windsor Ruins.

We left Windsor and headed for home via OPG and various roads. It was a nice day for a ride and its good to have a new addition to the local ADV population. :freaky

and photos. Real America; it's along the backroads...nothing "cookie cutter" about the scenery.

We didn't ride anything that needed knobbies. These tires are great at drifting gravel corners.

Enjoyed your posts. Nice ride to show the New Guy around.
You should of made the trek up the hill, behind the Presbyterian church. That old cemetery is something to see!
I have pics of it, but seeing it is the Best!

Nope! We didn't talk to them. We stood there blocking the road, stared them down, and eventually they rode on on silence after we let them pass! :huh

    What's up, Todd!?! :clap

    -------
On a side note, I found yet another location NOT to mount my video camera. I tried crash bars, but the vibes were too bad under hard acceleration / over 4500RPM. ON this trip, I tried the mirror stalk. This resulted in some freaky bendy weird video. I will have to edit out a sample for y'all to see. It was really trippy.. :huh:bert

Friday = cooked crawfish at work...
    Saturday = ADV techday
    Sunday = a rough morning...

Got up this morning and was NOT doing well. Made it through playing with the band at church, took a short nap, and realized weather was perfect, Wee had new shoes, oil, etc from the tech day... It was calling me...

So i started out at Shucker's Oyster Bar, parking my Japanese ride in the middle of The Motor Company bikes... like this one:

If any of you are planning a Natchez Trace trip anytime soon, be advised... A few miles are "closed" just North West of Jackson, MS
    [IMG]

Stopped by the Natchez Trace Visitors Center
    [IMG]

Headed northeast on the Trace, with no real destination, just following the front tire...
Stopped by the "West Florida Boundary"

Pulled off the Trace next to the Ross Barnett Reservoir to enjoy the shade, wind, and waves...

Had new tires, oil, etc for the Wee, so i wanted to test out the new tread on gravel, so I headed into the Pearl River WMA
    [IMG]

    Deer cleaning station?

There is a lot of small print for hunting or using the WMA

    Still in the WMA
    [IMG]

Thought this was a wooden bridge last time I was here...

    Bridge over the Natchez Trace
    [IMG]

Or the "Harley Highway" as some locals call it
    [IMG]

The backside of the WMA is gate, but has space beside the gate for a bike to pass, but someone doesn't like that.

On previous trips, we found a old phone line cord ties across the gap at neck level. This time there was an old piece of chicken wire that had been torn down. With my side bags, I had to use the horse trail to get by...

    Random homes I passed
    [IMG]

    Mooooo
    [IMG]

Old Courthouse in Canton, MS (also made famous in movies like "A Time To Kill", "my Dog Skip" and others...)

If I remember correctly, this was the lawyers office in A Time To Kill (played by Matthew McConaughey)

You never know what you will run into on MS backroads...

Made it out into the Farm Land.

Near Flora, MS, I stumbled across a series of "bunkers" I had seen previously but forgotten about...

Here is some more info on the plant that and what was there previously:
