Ok so I did the cannisterectomy last year after a stalling fit in my driveway, after that no probs. Today the bike shuts off leaving the dealer. I opened/closed the cap and it fired right up so off I went like a dumbass. Got 20 miles down the road and all hell broke loose. It would run for 1/4 mile then nothing. Open the cap and restart. after the millionth stop, I cut the vent hose and hung it straight down. A couple drips came out and off I went all the way back to the dealer. Oh good you fixed it, they say. I'm happy. Until it shuts off repeatedly for the next 45 mins. What I discovered is that I could turn off the ignition while coasting (and get a EWS code) and fire the bike back up. I did this several dozen times but I limped home. OK so...I need an interweb diagnosis/guesstimate. I did remove the vent hose from the top of the tack and took out the valve but didn't get to do a retest. I've had enough for today.
So if I get this right......I usually don`t.....No CC...... No vent hose......no check valve ..... I had`nt had my espresso today......so I am not real sure what you have installed...... If you refer to the tank cap off....then restart....it would make no sense....since it`s gutted....... Perhaps post exactly what you do have installed...... I`l have my espresso....then I`m sure we will get somewhere....... Erling
My WAG would be fuel pump. Find some way to monitor fuel pressure. Maybe plumb a pressure gauge into the line or round up a GS911. If the fuel cap is open and it's still stalling, it is obviously not a tank breather problem. Look somewhere else.
No Charcoal Cannister. Vent tube installed and capped with a breather per Yeti's post. I ended up slicing the hose at the breather and hung it down towards the ground. It ran for 20 miles then started acting up again. I ran with the gas cap open but it didn't seem to help. It could have in the fact I would go further between restarts Check valve pulled from vent tube at the tank (although I have not tested this yet.) While drifting along, I would turn the key off then on. A EWS error code would come up. Some research shows this is for the aerial ring error. Either is has interference with the key or it's dying. I'm glad for the 3 yr warranty.
I thought that too. I had the cap just unlocked, not open. Was running along and closed the cap. Bike shut off 2 secs later. Coincidence? With my luck it was. I am thinking fuel pump or something electrical. It would just turn over and over. Turn key off then on, fired right up. It seems like something may be rebooting. I'm starting to like my DRZ more and more....
Ok....I see...... I`m certain that your issue is not with the venting of the tank then. You could be prone to the " ethanol corroding of the fuel pump clogging the injectors" You can try a load of techron to solve it. If that does not do anything......then I for sure would call roadside ass...... Erling
I actually called BMW roadside assistance today. Their response was that I was at location too rural for pickup. I was sitting in a mall parking lot with a Staples, Dollar General and Giant supermarket 5 miles south of Pottsville PA home of Yuengling beer. That's rural?? Come to think of it, there weren't any Starbucks around. BMW Roadside Assistance's advice was to call AAA. :huh thanks Well bottle of Techron and not far from pushing range to the dealer. And now my wife can finally have a reason to ride the DRZ-SM. Pretty sure I'm gonna need a wingman.
had almost the same problem on my bike the other day!!! I installed my one-way check valve backwards ... really stupid mistake but it can happen ... and mine would just not let fuel vent out
That`s really odd...... Roadside picked me up at home......when the bike left me stranded.....at home..... No issues.....hmmmmm.... Time to whip out the hooligan bike....... Erling
Just to verify...... The arrow on the check valve is now pointing towards the tank...... You are not alone.... Lot`s think the arrow needs to point away from the tank....like a vent...... But it needs to point towards the tank...... Just want to make sure....... I`d be the one putting it in back wards as well.... Erling
I've had a fuel pump problem in the past too. Description posted here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=599568. Hope it helps.
F8 is at the dealer now. Trust me WM I've read your thread and every other I can find. Sounds like the same thing. Turning on the bike yesterday, the fuel pump had a different, higher pitched whine when it was building pressure. I may just be hypercritical right now. The service mgr at the local dealer seems to think fuel pump as well. Updates to follow.
update After a lengthy chat with the service mgr, hr confirmed a bad fuel pump and controller. Thats the good news. Bad news is the new pump is on backorder from Germany and will arrive between now and then.
That's what I figured. It took 3 weeks for them to get a pump from Germany for my bike. I doubt that the controller is part of the problem. They had problems with the boxer controllers because they got wet. Now they seem to want to blame the controllers on the F8s first thing. It's their lousy pumps. edit: In all fairness, my bike has run perfectly since the pump was replaced.
3 weeks for a part is bs. I'd suggest they pull one from their demo. Or, gimme a demo bike for 3 weeks... OR, refund me 3 weeks worth of payments. Just sayin..
I would agree but that ain't happening on any level. I'll just have to take 3 weeks of thrashing out in a short amount of time. THis is also why you have more than 1 bike.
So only 2 weeks to get my bike back. The service manager told me that when they took the rubber cap off the top of the fuel pump/electronics it was covered in water/mud/sand and that is most likely what caused the pump to eventually fail. Even though the this stuff is water resistant I guess it's not waterproof. He said the 1200's had this same problem but it was a recall. Not so on the 800's. So now anytime I ride in water or mud I will be checking this area.
