I just wanted to say hey to you SMIB's, Cat Herders, BWDR's, DDB's, BEB's and any other deviants that allowed me to hang with them over the last year or two. I made it to Dakar on Sunday and it looks promising so far. I don't think I'm going to have any problem finding dirt roads! I'll post a few pics this weekend as I get out and about. I'll start a day trippin thread once the bike arrives in a couple months and I start riding Hit me up if any of you FF's get out this way. I should know some fun roads by then and I'll have a spare bedroom for you. Todd
Glad to hear you made it safe and sound. Can't wait for when you start up the Day Trippin' thread. By the way, how's your French!? (that is the official language over there, no?)
Careful whatcha ask for... Need some painting done? Waiting on pics. Bike arrives in a couple months? :huh Bummer
If you need a personal translator, I'll be happy to help out! (in the same way Hack is happy to come over and do some painting ) Good luck with the French lessons.
Oh, there are plenty of places that could use a few coats Hack. They are in the middle of a building boom....... And it appears that it may stay that way; lots of half finished buildings but not too many crews completing the job.:huh
Come on over Denis. Thanks again Jack. So, one of the main roads is the corniche, it just so happens that every half mile or so they have wide speed bumps. They look like miniature table top jumps. Not so cool in a car but I can't wait to hit them on the bike. I'm a hooligan in waiting. I did see a nice looking Strom today and an Africa twin.
In Egypt, during the 1980s, the buildings weren't taxed until they were completely finished. An odd consequence, was every high-rise building in the major cities had an unfinished top floor. You know, not finished so not taxed. Wonder if there is something whacko like that going on?
Hey Dorito! I think it has more to do with a bust cycle at some point. There are a lot of partially finished hotels on the water that look like they've been that way for a while now. And then you go a mile down a road and there will be some serious building going on. I'm guessing there aren't too many HOA's here either. I just drove by a very expensive looking house with high dollar cars in front but a guy herding goats in the empty lot next door!:huh
Alright, I got out and about for a bit this morning. Most of these pics were taken while I was driving as well so they aren't great, but they will give you an idea of what I've been seeing. I think RaiderRed is going to show me around tomorrow so I'll try to get some better pics. Our apartment won't be ready for another couple weeks so they had to put me in temporary housing: And the view from the room It's within the Gov rate so I guess you could say I'm trying to be a good steward of your money!
Here ya go Dorito, I think this was supposed to become the InterContinental Hotel Dakar. I googled it and I'm not so sure it will be ready to go in 2013. http://www.ihg.com/intercontinental/hotels/gb/en/global/new-hotels/dkrdm Hauling re-bar the old school way "First, we will pray, then we will surf!" Mosque of the Divinity and what appears to be a beach club in front of it. Recon goats! Checking out the route before the rest of the herd crosses. See how the first one is eyeing me?
I saw a bunch of picture worthy stuff today but couldn't get the camera up before I drove by. I think that might be the final excuse to get a GoPro
