Hi Guys, Was wondering if anyone has tried using a 2X rivet gun (for aircraft riveting) to swage a master link pin? Looks like it would be easy to grind a rivet set with a conical point for this purpose. An advantage is that you would have pretty good control of the swaging. I have a chain breaker and the tool for installing the link side plate, but lack the rivet setting capability... Harry
Is this something you'll do all the time, or only once a year or so? If all the time, you might play around with a rivet squeeze, rather than a gun. Once you get the set depth tuned, you can make quick work of the rivets without worrying about clinching or smashing them.
BillUA and troidus, Thanks for the responses. And yes, this should be a very occasional occurrence; first one in 45 years of motorcycling... Regards, Harry
I'd just pick up a Motion Pro chain press and do it that way. This is what I did, and I also have rivet guns.
If you know someone with a lathe have them turn a conical anvil for your chain breaker. I made one for a friend who bought a Harbor Freight breaker. Also made him an anvil for pressing on the plate.
