Ximena texted me to ask me to tell you she values a keen wit more than any other trait and to reward you with this photo:

The connoisseur of Mexico states will realize that there is more to Jalisco than Ximena Navarette, Lake Chapala, Guadalajara, Tequila, and Puerto Vallarta.

But they are enough reasons to go and slake your curiosity of that most excellent region of Mexico.

When I was in Sayulita exxackly two years ago some of Ximena's companeras were doing a fashion shoot there. I never knew that there were Mexican amazons... all of these girls were 6' or pushing it and very shapely.

Later, when I drove down the coast exploring I got to one resort where a Danish film crew was shooting a reality series, the Danish version of Hotel Paradise, now there are amazons who can put away a fair amount of clear alcohol. They were drinking it out of plastic beach pails.

Further down the road at the lovely little town of La Manzanilla (North of Manzanillo a bit) I picked up a gentleman 80 years young and gave him a ride to his house. He said normally he would walk but he had just dropped his girl friend off at the bus stop. She was headed back to Guadalajara to do a little shopping. He said that I really should go up there to find a girlfriend, the girls are extraordinary and this 25 year old was wearing him out. Viva Mexico!

I also carry a 70 oz CamelBak on trips, but rarely use it because I do the above. I kind of think of it as my emergency supply. If I know bottled water is readily available I may sip from the CamelBak during the day. Refill occasionally with bottled water.

A friend of mine was asking about learning some Spanish before making a trip to Copper Canyon. I started thinking about it, and came up with 39 phrases which I consider a basic requirement to having a great trip. I didn't cover arcane things like negotiating with putas, or scoring weed. Those are for the more advanced class. :) Please correct or add to any of the translations or phrases as you see fit. I would have guessed that someone has already posted here at ADV something to this effect. If not, let me know, and I'll post it up in the Latin America section somewhere.

Really. I took this outside an OXXO in the suburbs of Tampico in 2006, according to my notes:

Yeah, I've had that response as well. The only problem is they can be telling you how many hours it takes to get there by bus,and not by moto. Still, might be good to add "horas" as an alternate pregunta.

Since I don't speak any Spanish I usually just say the word kilometers followed by the name of the place I'm headed with a questioning look on my face. It seems to work, but only if they grab a stick and write the number in the dirt. :lol3
